If you saw a serious car accident, and people were trapped in the car, or unconscious in the wreck, would you try to get them out even if the car was on fire and could explode at any moment?

Coming back from Quebec city today, I saw a car or truck in the ditch upside down and with lots of smoke coming out of the wreckage. 4 or 5 cars were stopped near by to look at the accident. This was on a highway, so that person must have fallen asleep to go into the ditch like that.

I was going 110km/h and I didn't stop, because there were many people stopped nearby to help.

If you were the only one on the scene of an accident, would you risk your life to get people out of a car on fire that could explode at any moment, or would you just call for help and wait safely?

Remeber now, you may have a family of your own that need you ALIVE. Would that make you think twice?

As long as it was humanly possible to help, I would. If it was already hopeless, I'm not sure how much of a help I could be, but I would certainly help in any way I could, even if it was just to comfort the injured.

If I were first on the scene, yes, I would stop. But before getting out of my car, I'd use my cell phone to call 911 and get help there as fast as possible.

I have First Aid training through St. John's Ambulance and CPR certification. I also carry a first aid kit and some basic assessment equipment in my car.

In some places (like Quebec, which is under Civil Law not Common Law like the rest of Canada) a person who has training and experience to render medical care or assistance in an accident is required by law to stop and render assistance, otherwise they can be found negligent.

Having been in a serious accident less than six months ago, I certainly appreciated the kindness and hospitality of strangers who stopped to help and who offered us shelter and dispatched emergency services to help us. I was in a state of emotional shock for quite a while afterward, and would not have been able to muster up the internal resources to do what needed doing by myself. So if I can ever repay that kindness by helping someone else, I will do it without hesitation.

I would stop if first on the scene. However, if the conditon is vey bad, (car totally on fire) i would not go in. It would be horrible to have to watch this, but it would be pointless to go in and lose your life too.

to add, haviing worked in Psych ER-i have put my life on the line many times. but i had back up.

Not to make light of these type of situations but...

I remember one question on the Louisiana driving test years ago that asked what you would do if you came upon an accident in the road with people injured. Based on the experiences I had with New Orleans drivers, I opted for the answer "Honk your horn to let the injured know you're coming through". (yes, that really was one of the choices)

As for real life, it'd be a spur of the moment decision - gut reaction to the situation at hand.

Yes but what if you could hear the person screaming for there life while the car on fire could you stand there and listen to that? I could'nt, true you might not beable to save them or you might die yourself or get hurt, but did not Jesus say there is not a greater gift than the man who gives his life for his fellowman? Now thats not to say lets be foolish but I think that we would try to find any means possible to save that person. Because I would not want that nightmare to haunt me the rest of my life. I have been in and have witnessed some very gross things in my life that still haunt me today. Have you ever seen a person up close decapitated ? I have. Or there guts lying on the ground ? or a limb torn off or blown off? I have. I have seen brains splattered shall I go on? Believe me I think I would rather have a few burns on my arms than to have another nightmare...........
