Every time I hear this song, it makes me teary-eyed. It can be pretty annoying while driving.

The words somehow seem to fit many stages in my life and represent everything from a dysfunctional childhood to a rebellious teen-hood to battered-wife syndrome to loosing my religion and dealing with the denial of all of it. "What alcholics might refer to as, a moment of clarity". (pulp fiction ) Kinda raps it all up in one short but big nutshell.

    Landslide (Stevie Nicks)

I took my love and I took it down
Climbed a mountain and turned around
And I saw my reflection in the snow-covered hills
'til the landslide brought it down

Oh, mirror in the sky -What is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above?
Can I sail through the changin'...ocean tides
Can I handle the seasons of my life?
    I don't know.....I don't know

Well I've been afraid of changin'
because I've built my life around you
But time makes you bolder, even children get older
    And I'm getting older too....

So, take my love...take it down
Climb a mountain and turn around
and if you see my reflection in the snow-covered hills...
well the landslide will bring it down
The landslide will bring it down

    The River

You know a dream is like a river
    Ever changin’ as it flows
    And a dreamer’s just a vessel
That must follow where it goes
Trying to learn from what’s behind you
And never knowing what’s in store
Makes each day a constant battle
Just to stay between the shores.

And I will sail my vessel
    ’til the river runs dry
Like a bird upon the wind
    These waters are my sky
    I’ll never reach my destination
    If I never try
So I will sail my vessel
    ’til the river runs dry.

Too many times we stand aside
And let the waters slip away
’til what we put off ’til tomorrow
    Has now become today
So don’t you sit upon the shoreline
    And say you’re satisfied
    Choose to chance the rapids
And dare to dance the tide.

And there’s bound to be rough waters
And I know I’ll take some falls
But with the good lord as my captain
I can make it through them all.

And I will sail my vessel
    ’til the river runs dry
Like a bird upon the wind
    These waters are my sky
    I’ll never reach my destination
    If I never try
So I will sail my vessel
    ’til the river runs dry.

A song that really speaks to me, that gets me right in the gut, is

Why Does The Sun Shine? (The Sun is a Mass of Incandescent Gas)

by Lou Singer and Hy Zaret, 1959 (most famously performed by They Might Be Giants)

The sun is a mass of incandescent gas
    A gigantic nuclear furnace
Where Hydrogen is built into Helium
At a temperature of millions of degrees

The sun is hot, the sun is not
A place where we could live
But here on Earth there'd be no life
    Without the light it gives

We need its light, we need its heat
The sun light that we seek
The sun light comes from our own sun's
    Atomic energy

The sun is a mass of incandescent gas
    A gigantic nuclear furnace
Where Hydrogen is built into Helium
At a temperature of millions of degrees

    The sun is hot...

The sun is so hot that everything on it is a gas
Aluminum, Copper, Iron, and many others

    The sun is large...

If the sun were hollow, a million Earth's would fit inside
And yet, it is only a middle size star

    The sun is far away...

    About 93,000,000 miles away
And that's why it looks so small

But even when it's out of sight
The sun shines night and day

We need its heat, we need its light
The sun light that we seek
The sun light comes from our own sun's
    Atomic energy

Scientists have found that the sun is a huge atom smashing machine
The heat and light of the sun are caused by nuclear reactions between
    Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Carbon, and Helium

The sun is a mass of incandescent gas
    A gigantic nuclear furnace
Where Hydrogen is built into Helium
At a temperature of millions of degrees

Hamas, WorldyGirl is right. That's Changes By Tupac Shakur.

These are all great songs. Me and A Gun, Landslide, and The River are some of my own personal favorites, too.

I've never heard that one Dedalus, but the lyrics are beautiful! I want to learn it and sing it as the OTS theme song.

A few years ago I'd just split up with my then wife, had money troubles because of the split, and was living on my own in an unfurnished flat drinking myself to sleep every night. I heard "Last Resort" by Papa Roach, and it just summed everything up for me. I've got my life sorted out now, but hearing it still makes me think.

    LAST RESORT

    Cut my life into pieces

    I’ve reached my last resort

    Suffocation no breathing

Don’t give a f*** if I cut my arm bleeding

Do you even care if I die bleeding

Would it be wrong, would it be right

If I took my life tonight

    Chances are that I might

    Mutilation out of sight

    And I’m contemplating suicide

    Chorus:

‘Cause I’m losing my sight, losing my mind

Wish somebody would tell me I’m fine

    Nothings alright, nothing fine

    I’m running and I’m crying

I never realised I was spread too thin

Till it was too late and I was empty within

Hungry, feeding on chaos and living in sin

Downward spiral, where do I begin

It all started when I lost my mother

No love for myself and no love for another

Searching to find a love upon a higher level

Finding nothing but questions and devils

I can’t go on feeling this way

I cry every time I hear Silent Lucidy from Queensryche because they played it at my cousins funeral.

    "

Hush now, don't you cry, Wipe away the teardrop from your eye. You're lying safe in bed, It was all a bad dream spinning in your head. Your mind tricked you to feel the pain, Of someone close to you leaving the game (of life). So here it is, another chance, wide awake you face the day. The dream is over, or has it just begun....? There's a place I like to hide, A doorway that I run through in the night Relax child, you were there But only didn't realize, and you were scared. It's a place where you will learn To face your fears Retrace the years And ride the whims of your mind. Commanding in another world Suddenly you hear and see this magic new dimension I........will be watching over you I........am gonna help to see you through I........will protect you in the night I........am smiling next to you In silent lucidity Visualise your dream, Record it in the present tense, Put it into a permanent form, If you persist in all efforts, You can achieve dream control... ...dream control... ...dream control... ::whispered:: (help me) If you open your mind for me You won't rely on open eyes to see. The walls you built within Come tumbling down; a new world will begin. Living twice at once you learn You're safe from pain in the dream domain A soul set free to fly. A round trip journey in your head Master of illusion, can you realize your dream's alive You can be the guide, but... I........will be watching over you I........am gonna help to see you through I........will protect you in the night I........am smiling next to you
This one gets me too. It is just so sad.
HURT by Trent Reznor cover by Johnny Cash
I hurt myself today To see if I still feel I focus on the pain The only thing that's real The needle tears a hole The old familiar sting I try to kill it all away But I remember everything What have I become My sweetest friend? Everyone I know Goes away in the end You could have it all My empire of dirt I will let you down I will make you hurt I wear this crown of shit Upon my liar's chair Full of broken thoughts I cannot repair Beneath the stains of time The feelings disappear You are someone else I am still right here What have I become My sweetest friend? Everyone I know Goes away in the end You could have it all My empire of dirt I will let you down I will make you hurt If I could start again A million miles away I would keep myself I would find a way.

    MARTINA McBRIDE

    Concrete Angel

She walks to school with the lunch she packed
Nobody knows what she's holdin' back
Wearin' the same dress she wore yesterday
She hides the bruises with linen and lace

The teacher wonders but she doesn't ask
It's hard to see the pain behind the mask
Bearing the burden of a secret storm
Sometimes she wishes she was never born

Through the wind and the rain
She stands hard as a stone
In a world that she can't rise above
But her dreams give her wings
And she flies to a place where she's loved
    Concrete angel

Somebody cries in the middle of the night
The neighbors hear, but they turn out the lights
A fragile soul caught in the hands of fate
When morning comes it'll be too late

Through the wind and the rain
She stands hard as a stone
In a world that she can't rise above
But her dreams give her wings
And she flies to a place where she's loved
    Concrete angel

A statue stands in a shaded place
An angel girl with an upturned face
A name is written on a polished rock
A broken heart that the world forgot

Through the wind and the rain
She stands hard as a stone
In a world that she can't rise above
But her dreams give her wings
And she flies to a place where she's loved
    Concrete angel

This Uncivil War By Gretchen Peters

There's a silence on the front lines
You can cut it with a knife
You can stay and take your chances
Or you can run to save your life
    And one side is retreating
    And the other's runnin' scared
And the drums of war are beating
    Even though it's undeclared

And both sides say they're winning
And both sides know they're losing
And neither one knows what they're fightin' for
And in the quiet little places
You can see the little faces
Huddled right outside the bedroom door
Praying for an end to this uncivil war

    Papa needs a new job
    So he's swallowing his pride
Oh, but it don't go down easy
And it eats him up inside
    And Mama, she don't notice
    Little sister's ragged dress
    Lately she don't notice
    Much of anything I guess
They're just fightin' off the hunger
Tryin' to keep from goin' under
But the wolves just keep on gathering round the door
There's no place to run for cover
And so they're turning on each other
Cause there really ain't no winners anymore Just
    victims in this uncivil war
