The Assembly and What Wasn't Said

Feel free to correct me but I am utterly UNABLE to find any trace of the blood issue or mention of masturbation in the

new book for kids released at the assembly. It certainly deals with other issues that require instruction such as birthdays,

holidays, the flag salute, and how to react to pedophiles, so I see the absence of these as significant.

Secondly, one assembly part made specific mention of "simony" - along with what may have been a few new faces

on the platform locally. Is it possible that the Society is cracking down on bribes made to Circuit Overseers to get

assembly parts? This 'good old boy' arrangement has existed for decades, maybe they finally noticed.

Assembly attendance seems to swing wildly from day to day and intra-day. It ain't like it used to be.

If I recall correctly, Simony is selling a position of responsibility within a religious organization. Perhaps similar to prostitution-getting money for it.

Simony is the selling of ecclesiastical priviledges, in other words, bribes for religious favors.

I never caught that word at my assembly, but I may have been nodding off.

    I found a definition here:

    Q. 15. What is Simony?

    A. It is the buying and selling of ecclesiastical places and offices for money, or other good deeds; so called, from the wicked practice of Simon Magus, who offered the apostles "money, saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost," Acts 8:18, 19.

If you see the same old faces on stage at an assembly, year after year, you may have a 'simony' problem.

Elders, usually with money, take the C.O. out for expensive meals at fancy restaurants. They may offer 'personal'

contributions or golf games, etc. After that, they may get assigned an assembly part.

I wouldn't put it past some 'brothers' to bribe the CO in certain ways. Also, since the CO weighs in heavily on appointments of men for postions in the congregation, that might be a factor too. I've been involved in cases where a CO nixed a recommendation made unanimously by a body of elders I served on, and in another case a CO made such a strong recommendation of another brother that we elders seemed to have almost no choice but to recommend him next time that CO came around.

While I doubt either case is tied in with Simony, they illustrate the power of COs and the tendency for some to want to ingratiate themselves to them.
