Smurfs

By now most of us have heard the urban legends of Smurfs vs. JW's.

Such as smurf dolls walking down Kingdom Hall aisles or strangling JW babies (replaced dingos eating them in Australia LOL).

the initial problem JW's had with Smurfs was that on the TV show they were conjuring up spells, later more ummm "enlightened" JW viewers started questioning a community of all males with only one female (smurfette).

So JW's felt that it was not appropriate for JW children to watch shows about magic.

It is this same reasoning that has scared some away more recently rom Harry Potter novels and Pokemon.

It was stupid when it involved Smurfs and is just as stupid now.

But there ya have it, the main reasons (if you can call them that...) that JW's hate Smurfs and developed such wild stories to enforce their opinion.

Does anyone remember Cabbage Patch dolls? These rather unattractive dolls were all the rage some years ago, at least here in Oz.

They were viewed as being channels for the demons by many (most) Witnesses, so that they were mentioned from the KH platform in talks as things to be avoided. It reached such an excited state that we had a Branch Committee member give a talk at the District Convention in an attempt to dampen down the hysteria.

    BTW what about garden gnomes?

    Cheers,

Good Evening Ozzie (or I guess it's morning for you isn't it?)

I remember the Cabbage Patch dolls and wanted one for my little girl and myself. I used to think they were adorable, and many of the JW children had them...even a few of the little boys had the boy dolls. But I don't recall any demon stories about them. No one that I can remember had any objections to owning them, but I'll check around and see what the memories are around here.

As for the garden gnomes, that was a definite no-no...magic and all that, even though they looked like the 7 dwarfs of the Snow White story which we all told our children for bedtime stories.

    Cheers

Oh dear, Had Enough, you were a bad mom! Fancy reading those demonised fairy tales to your kiddies at bedtime. No wonder kids are mal-adjusted

Here in Oz that was, and is, a definite no-no. The elders will be making a 'shepherding call' to talk to you about your errant behaviour!

    Cheers,

    ozzie

BTW it's another beautiful late autumn day here in Oz

    Hi kismet,
shortly after i was baptized i heard about a troll (dolls) running down the kingdom hall. I also heard about smurfs. I about died when i read a posting on this web site about smurfs. I never realized so many congregations from all over heard and believed such nonsense!!!!I have a question for you kismet. in a chat room i learned you were once an elder. Do elders read apostate information?? Lets say you find that someone in the congrgation has doubts because of reading apostate material, can the elder go over such material to dispute such claims and calm the persons doubts????
    Thanks JURS

    That's too funny Ozzie!

It was several of the elders' children and ours (my ex was an elder too) that all played together as we all lived in the same neighbourhood. They all heard the same stories and went to Disneyland in Florida USA where the characters Snow White, and such, were walking around and hugging the children. We all were happy parents snapping pictures.

My mom took me to see Cinderella when I was little and we (all the parents) took our children to see the Walt Disney movies of Snow White, Cinderella etc. too! GASP!!! all that magic, wand-waving and bibbidi bobbodi boo! My daughter still has fond memories of her favourite story - Snow White.

    Cheers!

    JURS:

Elders are generally discouraged from reading apostate material as are all JW's. Circuit Overseers in the meetings with the elders have provided reminders in that regard.

Still some elders decide to ignore that and do it anyway. Some make efforts to discredit the info but often resort to trying to discredit all apostates as fanatical evil doers with personal grudges that will lie chaet or steal in order to make the Society look bad. We know this is a sham but it often works as a tactic to convince people to stop reading apostate literature.

The brothers in the Legal Department at bethel however do read Apostate literature (to inform themselves beofre trials of arguments and tactics). This is never admitted to but all apostate books and pamphlets are in the Legal Libraries at bethel.

Hope this is of some help.

It must have been an Australian rumour about the Cabbage Patch dolls, as I remember it being a BIG no-no to own one of those dolls. When they first came out, I was still young enough to have dolls, and I was more than a little disappointed.

I remember a few years later a pic was in the WT of a family. The little girl in the pic was holding a Cabbage Patch doll!! This reassured us that they MUST be ok - after all, it was in the Watchtower!!
