Smurfs

I have a theory about how fear of demonization by the Smurfs became a worldwide phenomenon with the JW's:
I believe the Governing Body, after the 1975 debacle, felt they may be losing a degree of mental control over the flock, so they deliberately planted disinformation with District Overseers, asking them to have their immediate subordinates, the Circuit Overseers, make announcements around the world to congregations that there was no such thing as a demonized Smurf walking down the aisle of the Kingdom Hall. Utilizing this reverse psychology, knowing that word of demonized Smurfs would spread through congregations like wildfire, the Governing Body was thus able to gauge how much mind control they still held over the flock.
I believe this same practice is still being engaged in today, and probably moreso because of the availability of information on the internet exposing the JW's for what they really are.

    Prisca,

I remember that Watchtower illustration with the Cabbage Patch doll. It was so pointed that we figured it must be the Society letting all the R&F know that it was OK. At least it was used quite strongly by Mrs Ozzie to try to correct the views of many in the cong. who had been promoting the demon connection.

    How naive we all were!

    Cheers,

    Ozzie

P.S. Looks like good weather for the BBQ !

Cabbage patch dolls in Central and Upstate New York were most certainly demonised, lol.

How do we know this? Because, they were 'ugly' and no child in their right mind would want to play with an 'ugly' doll.

Yes, this was the reasoning that was prevalent in our area. My mom's bible student brought one with her son to keep him quiet, my mom put it in the car.

Gnomes and trolls-most def. off limits.

SanFranciscoJIM, you are a conspiracy nut! I love it! I totally wouldn't put it past them either. JW's are total gossip hounds so that type of thing would spread like wildfire.

And of course with the smurf thing, it did.

My name is Slipnslideius Masterus: commander of the armies of the North, general of the Felix legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius...

Slipnslidemaster, if the various agencies in the U.S. Government's alphabet soup can deliberately plant carefully placed disinformation, or encourage accurate information to be disseminated by crackpot groups (examples: Roswell, Area 51, etc.), then what is to stop a lesser organization such as the WTBTS from engaging in the same tactics?
The Society is also notorious for pleading ignorance on specific issues while perpetuating generalities to the flock (examples: 1914, 1975) - a tactic commonly practiced by the military known as plausable deniability.
Maybe I am a "conspiracy nut", but I also believe in calling a spade a spade.
