To be fair, they are in good company on this one. In the 1920's or 30's the New York Times ran an editorial against government funding for Robert Goddard's rocket research on the grounds that everyone knew that rockets wouldn't work in outer space because there was no air to push against.

They officially retracted it on the day of the moon landings.
