From the back of the 8/7/2003 Awake!:

So, who is this Erik Haaest, what is he an author of, and why would the 'Tower flog the recommendation of a wordly author so enthusiastically? Can any of our European friends enlighten us?

And feel free to comment on anything else in the above scan...

The Society is not flogging the author, but using the "recommendation" that the guy gives so enthusiastically about their book. The Borg does this often - as long as they can find someone who will say favorable things about their publications!!!

Also noticed that the cover for the Search for God book must be their softcover version. The original hardback was a plain red cover with gold lettering.

Looks like "flogging" to me, Pris! I find it interesting that the worldly association rule is seemingly suspended here. They give a non-Dub writer five whole paragraphs in an Awake! I'd like to know how this guy would feel about them if he got a little feedback from some of the victims of their various nasty policies, like the blood doctrine, the two witness rule in paedophilia cases and shunning of the DFed/DAed, as a few examples. I can't say I'm impressed by the research skills of an author who takes the "handsome couple" at his door and their literature at face value!

Skally, I can also use Google to come up with stuff in foreign languages that mean nothing to me - I was asking for someone who may have heard of him or even read his stuff to provide some commentary on what kind of author he is.

The only hit that comes up when you put his name and Jehovah's Witnesses in together is this one:

Have tried looking up his work "Aktion Prammen", but everything about it is in Danish.

Seems like the Watchtower is carrying on their grand tradition of quoting wierdos:

Oh, quick warning, the article on Dorothea Arbing contains explicit pornography. Go Watchtower!

Heh, heh! Good ol' WatchTower, associating with people they'd never let loose near their parishioners! LOL

This is exactly why I posed the question here - they've made the guy look good to Dubs in the Awake! ad, but given circumstances other than the positive statements about the Dubs, would they list as someone not worth reading??

And how. Seems that on this "Sven Hassel" crusade, anyhow, Mr. Haaest is the Matthew Drudge of Denmark.

I just might see if the local libraries have any of Hassel's books in English. Here's a BBC web page that piqued my interest.

It's interesting what they consider a recommendation:

I find their magazines extremely informative and interesting - if you disregard the preaching bits
I confidently recommend the book to anyone. Of course, there is also something about the faith of Jehovah's Witnesses, but that is only a minute part of this brilliant history of religion.

This is the opinion of many people I know and explains why the magazines have such a high circulation but result in such a low conversion rate. Most people find them interesting apart from "the preaching bits". Of course, that negates the whole purpose of the magazines - or at least their stated purpose.

Good point Derek. Subtract the number of baptized jws from the circulation number and you get about 16,000,000 magazines that are read by non-jws who likely have little intention of ever converting. And that inculdes Memorial attenders too.
