Serious sin would have to be dealt with once it became known or in the case of an inactive person when they sought to return to the congregation.

It depends on whether you are in the Good-ol-boy club... if you are they don't make anything of it, and if someone does they are counceled on forgivness. If you are not, then you will be going down hard... as if you had just sinned five minutes ago.

I have been out of the circus for about five years now, but a couple of anecdotal memories .

Bro & Sis H , had served many years ,he had been elder for most of it, they also pioneered , suddenly confessed to having had sex before they married 20 years ago. They were let off with "Private counsel" of a non judicial nature ( He had previously stopped being an elder) . Some of us at the time thought they got off easy.

Bro R, had been "Out of the truth" some time. When he started to come back he said had been imoral during that time, we told him to put it behind him and we never took action- preferring to view him as a prodigal son
