why not move? I'd love it if I could. I get paid a little above minimum wage but it's still under $15 and it would help immensely. I live in NYC where everything is expensive as hell. I was born and raised here so I never had a choice. My parents are legal immigrants but don't get paid much. My mom doesn't have a job. My dad uses his entire paycheck on rent and electricity. I got my own bills as well. after bills, I probably have only maybe $100 a week to myself. I could save that up but wait, what happens if I have to buy food, things for the apt, etc. Ideally, you'd want to have 7 months of rent before moving out, just to be stable. But it's harder than it seems. Cuz I need to move to somewhere I never been, with no guarantee of a job, get a car, take care of all my household needs and you get the gist.
I work with people that work 3 jobs and no days off and they are fucking exhausted. Know how many times I hear people say "all I do is work." how many people I know that work from 6AM-11PM mon-sat and then work only 12 hour days on sundays?
"Sometimes I wanna move out the country and never come back" I hear this a lot. So screw you if you think people are better off killing themselves physically and mentally than to pay them a little more.
And before the "go to college" argument comes out. Sometimes it doesn't work out. In my case, I qualified for almost no financial aid and took out $23,000 in loans, some of my friends, more. And I work with people that had to drop out of college because they needed to work just to survive for today.
