There are no measures that can be taken to stop what happened in California today.
Someone intent on killing with a gun will get that gun or guns legally or illegally.
They will ignore State laws and modify their guns however they want.
These killings are sadly a price we pay for the freedoms we demand to bear arms.
I personally feel responsible gun owners should be able to conceal carry everywhere anytime.
They would be the first responders gladly in these lone wolf situations.
If these lone wolf shooters thought there was a good chance of being fired back on rapidly, these massacres would stop.
California sets it up for them like shooting fish in a barrel. As do many other states.

The idea that so called 'good guys with guns' will save the day is a dangerous idea to risk your life with.
During the shooting in Las Vegas there were people in the crowd licenced and carrying but didn't pull their guns out for fear of being mistaken for the shooter. This is just one example. Anyone that has done any kind of self defence classes involving the use of guns will tell you what a chaotic, deadly situation it is.
It is so obvious to neutral outsiders looking at the U. S. gun violence that the problem isn't mental illness, it is the laughable ease with which almost anyone can get their hands on a 'tool', thats only function is to kill efficiently.

Although someone who already owns a firearm can get their hands on that gun far easier than purchasing one illegally. Same for if guns are owned by someone else in the family.

Exactly. There is no way to prevent them. They are a consequence of having firearms as part of the culture. The idea that they would only provide a benefit is unrealistic. Same with police - there will always be accidental / unnecessary shootings, it's inevitable.

Not really - many times there are armed responders, the police. Many times the person doing this intends to die themselves so the threat of death isn't really a disincentive to doing it.
The threat of return fire is more likely to be effective in a robbery situation, not a mass shooting / suicide.

The Las Vegas shooting was not a typical "person walking around a building" mass shooting. Ironically, it was more like the original mass shooting - indiscriminate fire from a high vantage point.
Someone firing into a crowd from an elevated position cannot be stopped by anyone being shot at unless they just happen to have a sniper rifle with them.

One thing that you don't hear much in the news is when a legal register gun owner does go in and stop someone from carrying out their evil deeds even further.
Like this lady who is a registered license off duty police who because she carried is allowed to carry a gun in public was able to stop a man from killing possibly several women and children.

In Oregon the laws are great!
A meth head can break in to your house and you are supposed to run.
You can only defend yourself if you feel that the intruder is actively trying to harm you.
If the intruder lives, and says you're lying and he wasn't trying to harm you, he gets to sue you for damages. Apparently, this usually goes worse for the home owner. The tweaker has nothing to lose.
The common feeling here with gun owners is that you are effectively forced to kill if you are planning on defending yourself and your family.

You can fight a guy with a knife in his hand a few people can rush him. If he has a bumpstocked big clipped semiauto, you're fucking dead. And anyone else in his vicinity. Especially if he has any training at all and knows to do short bursts.
The 2nd amendment, calls for a "well regulated militia" not the unregulated wanton distribution of every deadly weapon ever to be invented.

People are stabbed all the time. If you don’t have a gun , you will get a knife like they do in England. Or round you up and chop your head off like ISIS does. Whatever it takes to take people out. Throw a grenade in. Set up a device to explode during a run.

Getting back to the main point, mentally ill people do these things. Sane people wouldn’t storm into a club and shoot people. Fix and address the real issue, not the artillery
