A must read update to Darkspilvers subpeona

Reddit has joined the EFF's effort to fight the Jehovah's Witness organization, Watchtower Bible & Tract Society, who subpoenaed Redditor Darkspilver's identity using tenuous claims of copyright infringement.

Surprising that the org is making such a fuss about someone who never criticised or ridiculed the org - while here or on Reddit - and never submitted any JW material/news items which weren't already in the public domain and subject to Fair Use laws. Neither did Darkspilver give any hints while he was here that he was a devout J.W.

The org is apparently "pursuing" someone they know they have no legal chance of catching. Why?

    The Fall Guy:

Because they want to throw their weight around and try and scare off others from doing the same. They want people to think that Jehovah is on their side, and will shoot lightening bolts of justice at them for leaking copyrighted documents.

They want to create fear into peoples minds including those "within" their own organization. They want the world to believe that they own the Bible and no one else has a right to it, unless they get permission from the governing body.

They are "worried" that some of the leaked documents can get their asses sued off, and they want to put a stop to it. They can see very well that they are losing control of their members, especially elders, who leak the documents in the first place.

I was one of the main persons behind the scenes sending Darkspilver the documents in the first place. Then he would go over to Reddit and post them. Then he would come back over here and contact me to get more. I did this with him for quite some time.

They should be coming after me instead of him! I have posted 100 times more documents than Darkspilver and they should leave him alone.

It's because he is a JW that they want him so bad! They think he will give them the names of other JW leakers.

I really think this is being sold as something it isn't.

The only people who can determine whether a copyright claim is fair-use or not is a court. Not Reddit, not some self-appointed internet lawyer who's passed "the twitter bar exam". A court, based on a copyright complaint.

Every copyright holder has the right to sue to protect their copyright if they want to.

I don't think anyone has the right to hide from or prevent the normal legal process by claiming it's a freedom of speech issue or whatever the claim is.

This doesn't mean I think the WTS don't have things to hide or that it's good to highlight those things, but doing so requires some effort to protect your identity if revealing your identity would be problematic. Assuming that the provider of whatever online service will fight on your behalf is misguided and naive IMO.

Thanks. I must wonder i this legal move by the WTS is going to backfire. They really are desperate to find their internal leaks.

And what about the washtowel blatantly stealing Chariots of Fire from Vangelis, to use in one of its Kingdumb maladies? The original song came out early in 1982, recorded late in 1981--and the washtowel ripoff came with the 1984 songbook. Seems the washtowel can dish out infringement, yet they can't handle someone posting leaked material that might protect innocent people.

We seem to be back at the typical ExJW spot of "change all the worlds laws to suit US !!" without recognition of why those laws are there and what else they apply to.

If you reproduce someone else's material without permission then you are violating copyright unless you can argue that it's "fair use". Complaining that you shouldn't have to make that argument is stupid. How would the system of copyright work?

If success relies on overturning established legal systems that exist in multiple countries then you lose.

Yes Reddit have their own reasons for not wishing to comply with Watchtower and provide the users information. It’s not quite as simple as “Reddit unites with exjws to fight Watchtower”or somesuch.
