Political Correctness

It’s funny how PC changes over the years. I have a female friend in her early eighties who won’t call black people “black”. In her day that was like calling a black person a nigger, so she uses “coloured” instead as that was the PC word when she was young. I agree that there are many cases where PC has gone too far, in some cases absurdly so, but that doesn’t make the fundamental principles of PC invalid (which I think was OC's point). As with most things there are always going to be dick heads who will go to extremes, and in the PC cases it’s likely because they want to show-off how liberal and fair minded they are.

In a similar vein, I despise the way you cannot criticise Israel without being accused of being anti-Semitic, or say that you can’t stand Louie Spence without being accused of being homophobic, or say you can’t stand the Indian caste culture without being accused of being racist.

Yes, people use offence as a political tool in many cases to avoid criticism or deflect it rather than having to address points raised.

I honestly don't get why saying "colored" is considered offensive but "people of color" is not (what does the NAACP stand for ... ?). Now black is back and I guess African-American is out? Who sends the memo out?

I agree with the posters who make a distinction between ordinary political correctness (what used to be called politeness and common sense) and extreme political correctness.

Obviously, there are some words that shouldn't be used in everyday speech - it's unacceptable for a white person to call a black person the n-word, for example. Most people don't do this, and there are laws to deal with those that do - hate crime legislation, disturbance of the peace, etc.

But re political correctness, we've come a long way from common sense. The gay rights movement used to be called 'LGBT'. The list of initials grows longer each year. It is now something like 'LGBTQIA+'. Why not go the whole hog and write down the f**king alphabet!

There is more to OTT political correctness than one-upmanship over the latest trendy terms, however.

In rare cases, PC has exacerbated serious crime, or allowed it to continue when it should have been stopped. One example is the case in Rotherham, where men of mostly Muslim Pakistani origin groomed and abused white girls for at least 15 years. One factor that allowed these criminals to get away with it was the authorities downplaying the situation or outright refusing to report - in case they were 'racist'.

You have the Traditional Leftism on your college campuses, Veterans with PTSD returning to those college campuses to cash in on their GI money, and one veteran who just killed a bunch of police officers. Trigger warnings should come as no surprise. As much as I hate to say it, Political Correctness is a necessary un-American evil. And both candidates are greasier than a couple of bisexual Turkish oil wrestlers. Take that Political Correctness!

Some great comments about the dangers of misplaced 'political correctness' from Sam Harris:

If PC mean "Polite and Compassionate" we'd all be better off. What I mean is this. If you are simply polite and compassionate to another's situation good things usually happen.

Being PC can go too far and ultimately be controlling. Why do we have to agree? Why can't we just appreciate the other perspective and be generally polite about it. However it shouldn't mean that I must change my opinion.

For those that feel they can just say what they want whenever they want that usually works out for them until their on the other end of the offensive comment.

Marxist Theory concerned itself with the End of History as the ultimate goal when all classes would reach equilibrium under Communism.

To bring about such a desirable state, steps had to be taken to create upheavals, revolution, and disruption of existing states by pitting one class against another as victim/oppressor identifications were constantly forced into public awareness through Political Correctness as a means of identifying enemies.
In the Soviet Union under Stalin, Marxist doctrine had to be faithfully practiced by one and all in Literature, Opera, Art, news articles, public speech and any who spoke politically incorrect speech would be labeled, identified and purged.

Among Jehovah's Witnesses, a very similar policy is exercised by the Organization. No criticism of policies or doctrines is permitted. Anyone failing to observe theocratic correctness is marked, disciplined and removed. Certain terms such as Apostate create a virtual embargo on dissident speech just as politically, labeling somebody a racist will mark them as an enemy in America.

Political Correctness is Authoritarian control and fascistic coercion.
