    There is no other country in the developed world where this man could be elected.

    LOL. Berlusconi in Italy was in the same zip code.

    There is no other country in the developed world where this man could be elected - I disagree.

    I think there are several developed countries where a maverick politician could be elected.

    In the UK we have Jeremy Corbyn making a serious pitch for power. Why? Because the Tories are useless, as are Labour moderates.

    In Germany AfD are on the up. Why? Because ordinary Germans are sick of bailing out Greece and receiving refugees/migrants/terrorists.

    As Simon said, Trump was elected mainly because the Dems offered the US electorate Killary f**king Clinton.

    Can you spot a common theme here?

    In each case, the political class treat their respective electorate with utter contempt.

    Thinking about it I spose there was a time when most would have reacted the same way as Trump over this anthem mini-drama stunt, maybe even gotten all pitchforky over it.

    It seems less about the protest and more about this weeks episode of "What did Trump Say and how can we use it."

    @sparrowdown:

    Kaepernick has been doing it for about a year now. Maybe a bit less. All the fans have been pretty upset since the start. The media is freaking out more now that Trump said something.

    But if players are going to protest the anthem or flag, at least have a good reason. By that I mean one that is actually based in reality. Take these reasons for example:

    "I'm taking a knee in protest of the wholesale slaughtering of lawns each weekend as citizens everywhere mow."

    "I'm taking a knee to protest all the stellar star deaths that occur each day in the universe."

    These are stupid reasons - but even these are a little better because what's mentioned in the two reasons above are actually happening!

    You are so right, only unifying politicians should be elected:

    Chozick, June 13, 2008: He [Obama] warned that the general election campaign could get ugly. “They’re going to try to scare people. They’re going to try to say that ‘that Obama is a scary guy,’ ” he said. A donor yelled out a deep accented “Don’t give in!”

    “I won’t but that sounded pretty scary. You’re a tough guy,” Obama said.

    “If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun,” Obama said. “Because from what I understand folks in Philly like a good brawl. I’ve seen Eagles fans.”

    Has anyone brought up tRump's football failure from back in the 90s?

    Sorry if this has already been posted...

    Trump's failures - the glue that binds him to the common man's struggles. Feeding the illusion that the leader is one of the masses

    @OrphanCrow

    I don't think anyone has brought that up until now.... with good reason.

    I think the NFL should respond to D. Trumps tweets by making the announcement before the national anthem "The National anthem will now be played please stand if you feel inclined. It's your free will choice in the land of Liberty"

    @Brokeback: Nobody is suggesting taking away the right to stand or sit. It has always been "sit, stand, or kneel" all you want. It is a tad bit different for the players since they have employment contracts, and they agreed to stand with their hand over their heart as part of the terms of employment. It's just that the NFL hasn't held them to it.

    But! - The fans want to stand. The fans want the players to stand. The fans know the requirement is in the contracts.

    Personally, I don't care if they sit, stand, or crap their pants during the anthem. It just bugs me that the reason they give is propoganda at worst and stupidity at best.

    Why should the NFL respond to Donald Trump? Shouldn't they tell their customers that they are, in fact, wrong and should get on board with skipping the patriotism because ... well ... you know ... white supremacy and stuff? Why do you think this started with Trump?

    Fans reaction:

    Fans at Lambeau Field chant "USA! USA!" as players, coaches lock arms during the national anthem http://apne.ws/pTLVUvT
