Love old cars, that one looks super-cute.

We normally have a show & shine event in our town every year where lots of cool cars, old and new, are shown off.

Sadly cancelled this year due to Covid, but hopefully back next.

Road to nowhere...I wish it had been a Messerschmidt, they are ridiculously expensive. No it's a HMV Freeway made in Minnesota around 1980. I drove one all summer and honestly averaged 90mpg, it topped out at about 60mph. It was quite stable with a little steering geometry tweaks, it would actually go into a lateral slide rather than tip. It's greatest weakness was the single rear drive wheel (going nowhere in sand or snow) and the CVT dive belt had to be replaced after about 500 miles and it was a pain. I've had 2 of them.

I wonder why they didn't bring those to the US. They certainly were successful back in the 60's. I had a '78 TR7, it was practically a new car but had so many electric issues and a blown motor at 20K. I didn't really like it but my Mom insisted girls would like it, lol. So I was initiated into the British car mechanical issues quite young. I'm sure they have improved. American cars back then were nothing to brag about either.

We used to have a '71 Volkswagen Type 3 Squareback. Clementine orange.

It needed work. It was getting toxic to drive. The seal for the engine compartment was rotting and since it was literally in the back of the station wagon in the cabin, we were driving with the windows open to avoid choking on CO2.

We found a parts car on the other side of the city. Being young and stupid, we hooked up the parts car with a chain to the back of our decrepit Squareback and decided to tow it home through the city. I would be in the parts car steering and braking. My husband drove, and through hand signals out the window, he signaled to me in the parts car when to brake.

Traffic began to get pretty bad, stop and go, then we saw traffic cops directing traffic and realized that there was a parade! In the early nineties without GPS, we had no idea of the extent of it.

As we approached an intersection, a traffic cop signaled emphatically to stop. We saw the parade approaching and resigned ourselves to sitting there awhile. At least we would have a front row seat for the parade. And here it comes, the Popemobile with the pontiff waving to the masses of the faithful!

We then noticed vendors, and my husband got out to buy souvenirs for his Catholic relatives and left me sitting in a dead car towed behind a car sitting there without a driver.

The traffic cop wanted us to move, and now, and I shouted to my husband to get in the damn car. By the time he did, the cop was strenuously pointing in the direction he wanted us to go immediately. It happened to be directly behind the end of the parade. So, the faithful that were gathered in the streets pointed and laughed and we waved back while trying not to wreck and find a street that would get us home.

Zero out of five stars. Would not recommend. We should have had it towed, but that would've probably been more than the value of the car!

Great story! I had quite a few experiences towing crappy cars, but never following the Pope. I recall our old Opel fell in half so we got some bed frames to weld it together. Lasted another year!

Resurrecting this thread because I took on a new project this summer. My health has much improved but not yet able to return to a real job so I got a 1968 Bronco to restore little by little. I had hoped to just be able to repair much of the sheet metal but it became obvious soon that most of it needed replacement. Just shot it in a lime green, still a long way to go, all new wiring, rebuilding the 3 speed and transfer case. etc, etc. It's keeping me busy and off the couch.

Found an old pic of a project from about 12 years ago. The wheels are not yet attached but it is the only pic I have left. This one was reeeally obscure. Any guesses?
