Despite my hangover, I reluctantly went to the meeting yesterday (the gaps are getting bigger each week)

I know that my eyes were a bit out of focus, but this is true, the young elder (age 27ish) gave the talk from his laptop. His audience contact was crap as his eyes kept scrolling down the screen, mind you it was the worst talk I had heard for years, one of those 30 scriptures in 45 minutes events what we used to call read and run with no explanation.

it was the talk Jehovah the grand creator.

    Any way 2 questions

Has anyone else heard of a laptop being used for a talk or is this a world first.......

and secondly if you were a really good speaker who had memorised most of his talk, what would you be looking at on your laptop whilst giving the talk

Well, that's the first time I've ever heard of it!!

When the WT CD came out, and bros were starting to use it for preparing talks, there was alot of counsel given about use of material from the CD, not to neglect personal research, etc etc. Bros would print out huge slabs of information and use that, rather than put things in their own words.

So to hear of a laptop being used from the stage is very strange indeed!

The only explanation I can think of for him to be allowed to use it is perhaps the Speaker for the day didn't turn up, so he had to give a talk unrehearsed. Otherwise there's no excuse for using the laptop so extensively nor giving the Public Talk so badly.

The area I live in "strongly discourages" forbids the use of printed scriptures from the WT-CD (or other JW sites) for the meetings. When the Daniel and Isaiah books were being studied, it was frowned upon to print out the text in a larger font for the seeing-impaired although the WTS did provide this service.

    Study Aids via the Internet?

Some have felt that they are rendering a service to the brothers by posting researched information in connection with various theocratic activities. For example, a person may do research based on a public-talk outline and then post this, thinking that such information will benefit those who need to prepare the same outline. Others will post all the scriptures for an upcoming Watchtower Study or provide source material for the Theocratic Ministry School or the Congregation Book Study. Some may offer suggestions for field ministry presentations. Are such really helpful?

For example, when looking up scriptures in your own copy of the Bible, you can briefly review the context of each scripture. You can ‘trace all things with accuracy,’ as did Luke when he wrote his Gospel. (Luke 1:3) The extra effort will also help you to be skillful in looking up scriptures in the ministry and when giving talks. Many have stated that they are impressed with Jehovah’s Witnesses because they know how to use their Bibles. The only way that this can apply to us is if we make it a practice personally to look up scriptures in our own Bibles.

Laptops used at home to developed your talk is one thing but the talk must be printed out to be given on the platform.

I saw a brother taking notes on a laptop at a convention and an attendant went over and told him to put it away.

Well, if he has his laptop WITH him, then no ones going to see what Internet sites he's been visiting...

I actually think he is a techno ponce for doing that; what's wrong with stone tablets, eh? EH?

Imagine going into a Catholic or Baptist church service and the priest or minister giving a sermon with a laptop in front of them - ?! JW's are in their own little world aren't they?

Blondie, there was a similar KM article that came out around 1996 or 1997, and I remember it caused a big stink in my congo about whether or not the society had made a "rule" about printing out scriptures. It got so ugly that the elder who had originally presented the material, under pressure from the elders who thought he had overstated the Society's position in his original talk, got up later and made some retractions and clarifications. It was an embarrassing spectacle.

He just couldn't resist using his little toy could he.

Fiddling around with the keys is far too distracting for giving a talk... he should stick to paper... it's a lot easier to handle on stage.

We had a situation where the P.O.went on the platform without his Bible, using his palm ( very small hand held p.c. ).Also he was always using it in his seat during the meetings.

    Exactly what I was thinking...

At least he didn't do a PowerPoint presentation!

I remember when they came out with this "counsel" and even then thought it was so lame! As if JWs care about the context.

And don't print out that scripture in Psalms, Matthew or Revelation!! Better stay in practice so that you can impress all those "worldly" people with your bible-handling ability. Stoopid.

A laptop might be neat if you needed a lot of AUDIO clips to enhance your talk.

Telling someone to put away their laptop or palm device is authoritarian BS at its worst.

I suffer from ADD and I can concentrate better if I have the scriptures printed out. Otherwise - I get distracted and find I am absorbed in reading my bible instead of participating in the meeting.

I never look up scriptures any more during the Public Talks. I lose my focus.
