As already said nostalgia all around AND Just William too boot - great picture - who is it by and how did you come by it? Fascinating insight into an era of peace and security and nothing but happy memories - any chance of some autobiog re those days Englishman ?

    Core,

OK! The painting was commisioned by me from a chap in Portsmouth called Norman Elford. He was a headmaster of a school there with a grounding in art. Norman would only paint a picture if it had a steam locomotive as it's theme. In 1978 I attempted to sell Norman a house full of double glazing and asked him for a deposit of £100. He asked me if I would take a personalised painting instead. I agreed and Norman travelled up to Arnside to paint the pic.http://www.railart.co.uk/gallery/elford.html

    Cheers, Brian.

Obviously the pic is set in around 1957, and being painted in 1978 required some research. I told Norman about the Duchess of Montrose and he suggested setting the pic along with the old "Blood & Custard" carriages. He asked me to describe myself and my Nan, he was familiar with the old Morris 1000 so that was no problem. Now I've had the painting for 25 years and would never part with it.
