those out have more of a chance of getting the help they need.

without offending any of us here(including myself) I believe totally that the Borg attracts neurotics and turns them into psychotics. and if you were fine when you came in you will become neurotic and get worse the longer you stay. Wasn't there an unofficial study done in Australia that claimed the JWs have 4 X the number of abberant mental conditions than the general population?

I know I knew more mentally ill people IN the Borg than OUT. And for those of us who got OUT---it is because we decided to take control of our mental health and took the risks and left. Not everyone IN can handle that, sadly.

If they're not carrying over guilt and fear, yes.

I would say even if they are grappling with G/F, they are still better off.

I think it depends on what the mental illness is. For some I suspect that the Society is an anchor for them...providing the structure and definition they need to survive. For others I think the Society exacerbates their mental illness and they do much better outside the Society. Then there are those for whom...in or out...they're still whacko.

I dunno... it's like the term "functional alcoholic" - you're still an alcoholic, and someday the wheels will fall off if you're not working with it.

I would term that one the illusion of stability.

Adolescence is so painful because so much growth occurs on so many levels. Just like that, leaving a church that's been your crutch will hurt, but there's growth on the other side, no matter who you are. You're far more likely to get good treatment for your mental illness outside the WTS than within.

speaking for myself I do find my mental health far better now than when I was a part of the org. I suffered two mental breakdowns causing hospitaliztion and I firmly believe circumstances within the home and the congregation brought this on. Too much is expected of one in the borg. And until the day comes when the society stops requiring yesbots then maybe peoples mental health migh improve. But I doubt it.

I think leaving the borg can improve mental health. Being in the organization, especially if you're a woman, can really hurt your self esteem. That will only exacerbate a mental illness like depression.

People need to leave for the right reason though. Some leave and still think the borg is right. Those people may have an incredible amount of guilt and their mental health may actually worsen.
