    KJ.

Thats interestin. The dubs have a peculiar angle on things involving a buck. They are allowed to deal with the devil if theres money involved. Years ago, I recall, there used to be a dub lived opposite my flat. I was DF and every morning and every night we would walk past each other and ignore each other, he ignored me cause I was DF see. Anyway, one afternoon I come home and he comes rushing out of his house smiling warmly. "MAATTEEE....Jimbo...how are ya"? Hadnt spoken to me or even LOOKED me in the eye in 2 years. I wondered what the hell was going on. Anyway, it turned out he had heard there was a job at the place I worked and he wanted a recommendation from me, a good word in the bosses ear. See he was allowed to speak to me now, because the dollar was involved.

    True!!

Your aunt has a very fine Christian conscience. It will not allow her to attend a family party because a DF person is in attendance, but it will allow her to rummage at church jumble sales because she can save 5 dollars on clothing. Typical dub think.

I attended a wedding once where the grooms parents refused to attend unless I was struck off the guest list because they couldnt sit in the same ROOM as a DF person. He told them the wedding could get by without them. So they didnt attend their own sons wedding. Hows that one?

JWs specialize in practising emotional blackmail on those they hold nearest and dearest.

    Welcome KJ

Yes you have come to see the hypocrasy of jw's. They will bend the rules or "adjust their thinking" (it dosen't bother my conscience), when it suits them. And as Refiners Fire pointed out, the almighty dollar has a a lot to do with a lot of those instances.

The WTS does not want it's members to visit churches, and if it is bringing money to the church, then that is definately a no-no. Considered supporting Babylon the Great it is. Therefore if your aunt is paying an admission to get in, and or some of the profits are going to the church, she is "breaking a rule"

However they don't blink twice, if they have a Kingdom Hall up for sale, and the purchaser is another religious organization. No problem in dealing with "Babylon the Great " there. See the "Do as I say, not do as I do mentality here.

My family questioned the funeral in a church matter and found it expressly condemned by the WT. The ONLY situation where by a "christian" would have attended this religious service was if their presence was ABSOLUTELY necessary for the widow or such one. This was not permission of any kind, this was a concession for the grieving one. Marriage ceremonies where a pastor is officiating are likewise viewed as religious services and as such JWs do not attend. The reception was a conscious matter tho strongly discouraged as unnecessary worldly association. The attending of a religious service in or out of a church is possible grounds for disfellowshipping tho few Elders pursue the matter if a wedding or funeral is involved. Officially the building itself is not regarded as off limits but many JWs personally call the places "dwelling places of demons" as was commented on by other posters.

The difference of opinion of the matter reflects the lax enforcement and inconsistant interpretation.

My JW honey would not be caught dead in a church. I thought it very odd that he would attend a reception, no problem, but refused to attend a wedding church service. I figured the purpose of attending a wedding was to hear the vows made before God and man. The reception was just the party.

I absolutely agree that the real reason the WTS burdens the conscience of JW's with these piddling rules, is that they would discover that church people are a lot like them; pleasant, friendly, and clean-living. No demons in sight.

By the way, welcome to the board!

    Welcome KJ....glad you posted!!!

As a person raised as a JW and have lived it for many years, I know there were many that wouldn't step foot in a church for a wedding, they considered this "pagan"...uh huh....

However, I must have been a "thinking JW"...because my power of reason said: "this is just a wedding, not a religious service to become another religion."

In the early 1990's I attended my first "church wedding", I was invited by my landlady, who was 75 and had found true love. She was so sweet to me and showed me a lot of love, treated me like a daughter and I wanted to show her I appreciated her kindnesses. And being the hopeless romantic that I am....I went to this wedding and reception. I never broadcasted that me and my family went though, I was "smart" enough to know that this was a conscience matter and didn't want to stumble any at the Kingdom Hall or have them "label us as weak in the faith" just because they had strict consciences on the matter.
