I live in the US, but I've done a bit of travelling. I spent about a month in England, and all the northern European countries, and Russia. I spent about a month in New Zealand and Australia, which was fun. I also spent time in Mexico around the Mayan Riviera and a few weeks in the Virgin Islands and Jamaica.

They were just vacations, nothing to exciting. I saw the sights, met the people and basically had fun. As far as which places I liked best, I'd have to say in order of my favorite to least would be:

    (1) New Zealand - One of the most beautiful places I've ever seen along with nice people.

    (2) Virgin Islands - In the 2 weeks I was there I stayed on St. Thomas and visited St. Croix, and St. John. The people were nice, the scenery was great and being able to walk right out the back of the house we were staying at and go snorkeling in the crystal blue waters whenever we wanted was a plus.

    (3) Australia - The people weren't always that nice, but caving deep in the Blue Mountains was fun along with exploring the rain forests close to Cairns and visiting a cool hippy town in the mountains, and scuba diving with sharks in the Great Barrier Reef was an experience.

    (4) Northern Europe and Russia - The people in most of these countries were very nice. It was a cruise, so I didn't really get to see all the places that I wanted, but I did go to the capital of all the northern European Coutries and spent a few days in St. Petersburg, Russia. It was fun, but it was such a whirlwind trip being in a new country every day that it wore me out.

    (5) England - This trip was fun, but it was right after the cruise through northern Europe. I stayed in London for 7 days, explored the city for about 4 of those days and then for the remainder visited the town of Bath and Stone Henge and such.

    (6) Mayan Riviera - This is one of those trips that I have fond memories of since it's just a memory, but it was just an average trip while we were there. My wife and I wanted to take a special trip for our first anniversary, which was around the first part of June. The water was beatiful and crystal clear and the accomidations were nice. But everywhere we went we were attacked by hagglers which got kind of old after a few days. And since it was right after US school had been let out, we couldn't walk 5 feet without running into another drunk sixteen year old kid who'd come down for a school trip or something. We did get to see a lot of Mayan ruins and did some snorkling in a cave in a jungle which was cool, but still had a lot of tourists.

    (7) Jamaica - Nothing special really. I should have saved my money on this one. Most of Jamaica is in poverty and the housing is in horrible conditions. Run down shacks are everywhere and most of them, which are made of plywood and tin have a sattilite dish sticking out the top.

Maybe I had a bit of a bad experience, but 5 minutes after I got off the plane a guy walks up beside me and sticks a bag of pot in my pocket and says, "that'll be $40." I said no thanks and gave it back. The guy at the airport that was working for the resort we were going to be staying at asked if my wife and I would each like a Red Stripe beer, he left for a second and came back with beer, I took a drink and he says, "that'll be $12, it's $6 a piece." I said "fine" and gave him his money.

It was that way for the rest of the trip, we'd just come across people on the street who didn't have anything to sell and they'd say, "I really want to sell you something, let me see what I can find and would pull out a small Jamaican coin or something and say $5. If we wanted to take a taxi back into town, which was 5 miles away, it was $15 there and $15 back. As far as I could tell, if you're an American, you're just viewed as walking greenbacks. Everyone expected a tip, a tip to get a seat at a resturant, a tip for the server of course, and a tip for the guy that calls the cab, and I wasn't going to tip the cabbie because geeez, $15 for 5 miles is good enough.

I haven't travelled alot, but I was in Germany and Austria some years back. My most recent visits were to the US, when I visited XJW's in ND and Detroit. The Detroit XJW's were amazing, and really spoiled us! I can't get back there to visit soon enough!

Descender, sounds like some truly fun and exciting vacation spots....New Zealand sounds just as wonderful as I think it'll be....and I'll love it when I can visit Australia too.....but I know what you mean about Americans being looked upon as walking greenbacks....in Cyprus, the locals had three different prices for everything, depending on where you were from....the lowest prices were for the locals (of course), the next higher prices were for the U.N. troups stationed there....and the highest (are you surprised?) prices were for the Americans....the Greek grocers just loved to tell us Americans the prices of their merchandise...and then follow up with the word "mono" (only)....with a big grin....

Walter, I haven't done a lot of traveling either....yet.....and most of my traveling has been done here in the U.S. where I live....but Germany and Austria! WOW! Was the Berlin Wall still up when you went there? Didja get to see the Lippizaners in Austria and where they train 'em? I'll bet Detroit is really kewl, too....Are there a lot of food venders on the street like in Chicago?

Frannie, the Berlin wall was still up when I was there, but I didn't get to Berlin. I spent my visit in Frankfurt, Saarbrucken, Lahr, Stutgart, Munich, Linz, and Vienna. Mostly we visited family and saw some historical sites. I took a ton of pictures, which have since gone missing! GRRRRR!!!

Detroit was VERY COOL, especially because of the people I met! I didn't notice many food vendors on the street, but that's probably because I was too busy getting to know some very excellent XJW's! We Canadians came home spoiled rotten!

Coming home was one of the hardest things I had to do in years!

I went to Kmart quite a few times in my life. The styles of clothing there were kinda strange. They also had some really low-grade technology. What the hell would anyone do with a triple cassette deck? And the food there was really crappy. Lots of those wafer bars.

The Greek Islands are my favorite destination -- can not totally explain why -- combination of history -- clean swimming water, food - mediterranean diet, sun, culture -- going on an island hopping boat and scuba/snorkelling off the boat is great fun as is travelling around old ruins -- but I love all travel -- so many places in the US/Canada to visit also -- London is brilliant -- never get bored of going there -- I could go on and on

Yer KIDDing, Stilla!!! I loved it on Cyprus....but I will never go out in a small boat...namely a kayak....in the Mediterranean again....we were almost dashed against some rocks sticking up out of the water and hadta paddle like some beaches to get away from 'em and back ashore...(WHEW!!!)...but, like you said, I enjoyed the clean swimming, food, sun and culture...we even saw some of the old secret meeting places of early christians....they were sheep pens...actually large "box-shaped" holes dug out of the lava beds in Kyrenia with dug-out entrance "ramps" at each end which could be easily guarded....there were altars carved out of the walls of the box-like structures....and they could not be spotted from a distance, since they were "flush" with the land....you could only see them when you came right up to them.....

Dave and I have traveled quite a lot, and the most interesting place we went to was Poland, for the 1989 conventions.

I went to Malaysia twice on business, alone. I can't believe I did that. Here are photos of me sightseeing in Malacca. I loved it very much. The people are amazing, but I wouldn't go there without my husband again. I sure stood out............tall, blonde with short hair, American. Malaysian women are mostly short, and either Chinese, Indian, or Malay. The Muslim women wear long beautifully colored dresses and head scarves. I dressed in long dresses so I wouldn't stand out too much. Of course there were other tourists there, but at the office, I was a lone eagle. At the hotel, the employees all watched out for me, and my safety. One day I was going to walk to the main part of town, only a few blocks, and the concierge stopped me and asked where I was going, and called for the hotel limo to drive me. Free! They called me "Mrs. Marilyn" not "Mrs. King", one of their customs. That was what I was called at the office too. I learned a lot about Islam while there. Actually I got a birthday gift the other day from a Muslim woman I met there. She is an engineer, educated in England, and married to an Englishman who converted to Islam.

This one is with Malaysians who came to Seattle. I am in the back. It was March and they were FREEZING. Malaysia is about 100 degrees all the time.
