    Eat More Dogs, Cambodians Urged

Sep 11, 10:23 am ET PHNOM PENH (Reuters) - Cambodians are being urged to eat more dogs as part of a crackdown on stray mutts wandering around the capital of the southeast Asian nation.

Although dogs, along with creepy-crawlies such as spiders, beetles and crickets, are found regularly on menus in deeply impoverished rural areas, eating them is frowned upon in the relative sophistication of Phnom Penh.

City governor Kep Chuktema says it is now time to draw up a special pooch policy to control the growing problem of pavement-fouling strays, and for city-dwellers to throw off their traditional snootiness toward dining on man's best friend.

"Come on, dog meat is so delicious," he was quoted as saying in Thursday's Cambodia Daily newspaper. "The Vietnamese and Koreans love to eat dog meat."

"(Cambodians) don't have wine, but poor people can enjoy their dog meat with palm juice wine," he said.

Hitherto, Phnom Penh dog lovers have had to keep their tastes under wraps by asking for 'special' or 'jogging cow' meat in restaurants.

While eating a canine is not my particular cup of tea, those who are so quick to criticize the Vietnamese and Koreans who do so need desperate instruction on cultural/regional values.

For example, in India, the cow is considered a sacred animal. The very notion that Americans have millions of fast-food restaurants where hamburger is served is imponderable.

In other countries, rats and dogs are considered fine delicacies.

Just because a belief system varies from your own, does NOT make it wrong.

Simply inserting my 2 cents on this discussion.

When my dad was in vietnam around 68 and 69 he said the only fresh meat you could get was dog meat. There was a little taco stand that sold dog meat tacos, he said they were good. Not better than beef but better than eating a rotting chicken.

Of course, the thought of eating a dog is not appetizing.

But in these countries, sometimes.....(you have to have either lived there/been there), and you can somehow wrap your head around it.

I lived in the Philippines. Now, to set the matter straight, no.....they don't eat dogs everyday.

Some areas, and some very poor people there, may. But it's the exception not the rule there.

I've been over to Thailand, and someone I knew from there told me about this. But then also, there are these insects that are fried to a crispy consistency and are served (Mangda) I think is the name, and are considered a delicacy. Yes, I've seen it. Looked like fried garlic to me....no I didn't eat any.

Cambodia: those poor folks, still trying to recover all these years. That people resort to eating dog, well.....we don't have much to complain about here in so-called First World countries.
