    That it wasn't true.

    - How that religion survived while none of their prophecies came true.

    - How they control people in every way and get away with it.

    - The hatred that they can generate if you displease them.

The control it has over people, who are otherwise very logical and seemingly intelligent.

Was that almost anyone can be conned into thinking that they really have THE TRUTH while the rest of the world lives in ignorance.

I think that's what bothers many.

That they, I, could be conned by a book publishing company pretending to be the mouthpiece that God would use.

How about all the unhappy people "in the truth"?.....All the emotionally and mentally distressed ones? All the miserable gossipers and backbiters that are "Jehovah's happy people".....All the thickness and density that exists in so many brains......

I think the single biggest thing that surprised me was when I realized there was a HUGE difference between the teachings about the group practices and the actual group practices . . . . like the claim that if one has a question about Jehovah's Witnesses the best place to get those questions answered is by Jehovah's Witnesses. The claim in my case was not true. When I asked questions, I was met with suspicion, and lots of promises by Witnesses to do some research on my question(s) and get back to me. Soon after I asked questions the group shunning started.

Those were days before I was on the Internet. Now I know the way I was treated is standard procedure and my case was not unique. I naively believed them when they told me it is okay to ask questions and I never asked any for years. As soon as I asked questions, I was lied to, marked and shunned. The shunning angered me and here I am. GaryB

That was the first thing that bothered me, that JWs were a hypercritical, judgmental lot, and I was just like them.

What shocked me most was how much money the Watchtower Society made, and how much they manipulated people.

It's true that when you are around the "friends", you can become a catty, negative person. You get in the group nitpicking mentality and before you know it, you're judging people, left and right.

That one could never ask questions before bapt. or after. They always put the idea in you that asking questions implied that you were weak, and lacked faith; therefore, since you want to progress within the organization you stop asking. You dumb down so you can become a mature one. Only the children had the guts to keep on asking then leave when the answers were not given. Wasted day and wasted nights for 35 years . Unanswererable questions is what surprized me.
