One congregation in the 70's allowed ONLY white shirts to be worn on the platform. If an out of town speaker didn't know the "rule", it was ok. The brothers kept a variety of white shirts in different sizes in case that happened.

In my congregation, only elders were allowed to wear (neatly trimmed) moustaches. Ministerial servants had to be clean-shaven.

Several of the young women in the congregation studied each week with an older, well-respected woman in the congregation. She laid down several rules for appropriate women's attitire. I remember he telling us all to get down on the floor and stand on our knees. If the hem of our dress didn't touch the floor, it was too short.

Arghhhhhhhhhhhhh...so many rules; so little time. One friend of mine who was a very gregarious, outgoing person was told by the PO that she laughed too loud in the Kingdom Hall. This same PO and one of his henchmen would walk around telling couples that they were forbidden to touch each other in the Kingdom Hall. This also applied to married couples and any guys sitting together. The carpet was to be vacuumed only once a month so it wouldn't wear out...so those nasty little manual carpet cleaners that didn't do diddly squat had to be used inbetween.

We also were forbidden to heckle the local speakers or throw rotten vegetables at visiting speakers.

arghhhhhhh------Talk about control freaks!!!!!...........................In our Hall, if a brother didn't get at least 10 hours in per month, he couldn't be a WT. reader. But he could read at the Congregation Book Study.

There are plenty of "UNWRITTEN RULES" too, such as: Pioneers should not buy 2 door cars or have a secular job on the weekends.

We had an elder that made the rule that you could not sit in the last three rows of the kh unless you had children under 3 y.o.

To enforce this policy they would rope off the back rows and only allow families with small children to take a seat.

They also had a rule that you could not sit in the library during the meeting. There was an old man who would only come to the meetings if he could sit in the library. He was told not to sit in the library...so he quit coming.

In our KH, young, engaged couples were counseled if they were spotted holding hands. My own mother just about went berzerk when she learned my sister had held hands with a boy was courting her. She really lost it again when she learned that my sister, who was to be married, engaged in "passionate kissing" with her fiance just a few days before the wedding (!!!) .
