There is no evidence that there is any form of spirit realm, or any existence outside of the cells of your brain.

Yet, a belief in an afterlife is one of the most commonly held ideas of the human race. We appear to have the need to believe in something like this, but no testing has ever substantiated it.

What about animals? Do they have a soul that continues after death? If humans do, then I don't see why animals would not. The difference between humans and animals is merely a matter of degree.

Colonel Sanders must be responsible for a large part of the population of the afterlife. I'll bet there are clubs devoted to desecrating his memory.

My grandfather was an atheist most of his life. He was also a scientist and inventor. He refused to believe anything unless it was accompanied by empirical evidence.

Some years ago, my grandfather's best friend lay on his death bed. After all the man's family had arrived, he called for my grandfather. When my grandfather arrived, his friend asked him to open the window. It was a bitterly cold January day, and my grandfather refused, stating that it was too cold outside. The man looked at my grandfather with eyes he had never seen before, and shouted "Open the g*ddamned window - NOW!" It frightened my grandfather so badly that he went over and opened the window. As soon as it was open, my grandfather felt something rush past him, going out. He looked over at his friend, and he was dead.

Had this story come from anyone else, I would have dismissed it as fodder for the tabloids. My grandfather was a very scientific, practical man. I have to believe this really happened.

From that day forward, although he never involved himself with any religion, he came to quietly believe in the existence of God.
