We love the Orlando area. La Nouba is especially enjoyable.

We're going to retire to the Central Fl area, in fact we're working on our house plans now. The boys graduate from college this year and won't need Daddy's bucks anymore (we hope), and will likely move out pretty soon too. We won't need this big damn house anymore. See ya round the links.

I don't know where you're from, but maybe it's more a demographic/geographic problem and not related to the WTS' dumb edicts.

My experience growing up JW was more like Maverick's - all cultural endeavours were heavily discouraged/frowned upon. Only Bible study, field service and 'Christian fellowship' were considered acceptable by the powers-that-be.

Artistic abilities were quashed, and OMG - go to a concert - you heathen! I secretly went to my first concert at 17 - Supertramp. Since I was a pioneer, I would have been 'counselled' for going to an evil rock concert where there might be 'drugs'. Similar attitudes toward theatre (might learn something), and god forbid if you wanted to PURSUE any kind of career in the arts.

In fact, one of the local brothers (toured with Gordon Lightfoot, a Cdn. top-40 singer of the 70's, and left when he converted cause the music industry was 'so corrupt') was always set up as an example of leaving worldly pursuits behind (READ: a successful music career) so he could pursue Kingdom interests full time.

I guess it all depended on who was controlling your circuit/district, perhaps?

    Oh my!

I have only watched them once in practice: I was in awe!

    Phenominal people.

    A must see!

I think you're right about that Talesin. Perhaps because my "extracurricular" activities in no way infringed on the so-called theocratic pursuits, I was left alone. After all, I was already doing more than most in the Kingdom Hall so what could they say?

Guess I should learn a lesson myself and not over-generalize and project my experiences onto others, eh?

Amazing, isn't it, how things seem to differ from place to place? I have learned so much in the past few months about how the rules were one way in one place, another way where I grew up.

Guess I should learn a lesson myself and not over-generalize and project my experiences onto others, eh?

Hey, we're all learning from each other! If we don't speak up about our personal experiences, then how can we share? I'm happy you had a little more freedom as a youth, wish I did.

I wouldn't presume to say you were over-generalizing and projecting - sorry if I came off that way. I woulda got back to you sooner, but my mouse died (no batteries, just picked them up today.)

    Take care,

Good point y-all! Here in the South they think colored dress shirts are quite bold! And when I was going to move to So. Cal...1980...they warned me about Jehovah's Wild Witnesses! Each local group has a personality and it varies a lot from group to group and time to time! I guess God's kinda confused about what is acceptable! Want to get hard looks at the Hall...quote Shakespeare! Maverick
