I think the reason why they can't admit its wrong is because they would be admitting what they believe and hoped for, for the last 50 years was all wrong. Its like the person that gets conned and is too embarrass to admit they were fooled.

My father's most annoying phrase is still "The time is growing short". I've mentioned it before but, when I hear him say that I always wanna yell "Time is a CONSTANT!" Ugh!
