    AP,

I think I know what you're trying to say, but, to coin a phrase, I don't have to put my hand in the fire to know I'll get burned! I don't need for people to commit ethnic cleansing to know evil is out there! At the same time I don't feel I have to blame Satan for evil and praise God for good.

If you believe in God I can respect that. I look forward to your next post where, perhaps, you can explain why the holocaust was permitted by God; why 28 MILLION Russians had to die; why he allows cults like Watchtower to be used in his name knowing that families are being destroyed by it, etc., etc., etc.

AP, I'm genuinely not bitter about this - I am just interested to know how people can accept a God of love and believe we are made in his image when the love of most men who genuinely display love that I have seen transcends that of any Creator!

Do you not think most people believe in God out of fear - because they want life after death somewhere? As has already been mentioned, would you not agree that man has made God in his image?

For what it's worth, if there is a God I believe he's just left us all to it!

    Best wishes,

    Dansk,

It is so refreshing for me to able to voice my doubts about a loving God without fear of being hauled into 'The Back Room'

I have always felt angry when I think about all the heartache in the world, and God does nothing about it.

To be told that everything will be alright one day, and we'll all be in a paradise, is just not good enough. If this life is not that important, but leads to a better life, why do some people have the luxury of having it so easy, while others live a life full of crap? Why are some babies born to die within minutes? What have they accomplished? They didn't even get a chance. Why do some people (a minority) have everything on a plate while the majority of the world lives in poverty? It all makes me so angry. Is God having a laugh, or what?

    Hi Anglise,

    We cross-posted

He/she/it doesnt exist but if it did would have the same capacity for good and bad as we have but on a much greater scale ie paradise earth and armageddon, heaven and hell, angels and demons

When I was a little boy I was in awe of God - and then asked a typical child's question "Mum, who made God, then?"

As you can imagine my mum replied "Oh, God's always been there!" - and that's what Creationists still say today.

But, actually, now that I'm older and wiser (anyone can become wiser once Borg-free!) that child's question is right on the button. We might dismiss the Big Bang (I still find it difficult to believe something to come out of nothing) but, to me at least, believing in a Creator is no different. Where the heck DID he come from?

To say man invented him is a lot easier to accept.

Dansk:For a change, I agree with Spanner, it's the eternal question "Why suffering and death?".
Man has been trying to answer it throughout his whole existance as a self-aware being.
Man does create God in his image, as evidenced by the various religions of any flavour you care to mention.

IMHO God transcendes such descriptions, but that's my flavour, so just as suspect as anyone else's.
I have no answer to that particular question, because life just doesn't appear fair from a human standpoint.

Coming back to your original question I would have to shed any preconceptions of various religious bodies and, if taking the biblical creative statement as true, try to divine in what way we could possibly be like God. Alternatively take the Calvinist view that we are in a fallen state that is "Totally Depraved"

    JT:

This may be accomplished by turning our questioning gaze inwards, towards the center of our being; rather than outwards into phenomena and intellectual expression.

And yet this will ultimately cause us to look outside of ourselves, as we submit our ego to the "whole".

I don't have to put my hand in the fire to know I'll get burned!

So you believe everything you were told? No, I think not, but you obviously came to trust certain tellers, and/or you've put your hand near enough before.

I don't need for people to commit ethnic cleansing to know evil is out there!

How come? Do you just believe people are that evil without evidence, a witness? Anyway, how do you know what "ethnic cleansing" is - did people bandy that about before someone ever did it?

Being created in the likeness of God includes being an autonomous being. We aren't robots, nor His slaves. As for the holocaust, the Russians - is it still happening, no - it was stopped - jwism is still happening, but will it go on for good? - no, it too will be exposed for being the evil that it is, with all the hurt that it is responsible for - which is, else it too would not be real.

if there is a God I believe he's just left us all to it!

    To a point.

    Hi Lt,

Good to "talk" with you again.

As for the holocaust, the Russians - is it still happening, no - it was stopped

Yes, but it was stopped by men.

Ostensibly it was to rid Europe of the Nazi tyrant - in reality it was driven by sheer politics! God had nothing to do with it. Remember, although Hitler was stopped all that happened was one tyrant was replaced by another - Stalin - and some would say he was even worse. Dansk

    AP,

So do god and the angels have to experience pain and suffering to enjoy their existence? I have to say that many of these forced apologetics are quite intellecutally insulting!

God had nothing to do with it.

And that's where our beliefs separate. When people suffer, others are able to see the truth about themselves, hopefully, especially as they don't believe it when told.

    God is spirit

I should think the jw hearing was more like "God is a spirit being", like a different kind of man or something - like themselves

man is created in God's image - jw god is created in man's image
