Hmmm....beer in a stew, huh? I cooked mine with burgundy. I didn't put potatos in it; I put celery, carrots and onions with thyme and bayleaf. Of course the meat was seasoned with coarse garlic salt and pepper and dredged with flour.
I'd better try that beer version. I'm curious.

Sunshinetoo, chunks of potatoes are lovely in beef stew as their outer layers soak up the sauce in tha sauce, too.....lol.....Oh! and you're right, I forgot about the carrots....they belong in it, too...

Besides beer...barley is also a good ingredient to thicken up a nice beef stew.
