englishman, i understand which post you are refering to, however, those lyrics are metaphors to what religion does to people. it's not hate speech, and although it swears, i think the methaphors are quite true. but, whatever, if you feel you need to delete it, than so be it.

What has religion done? Unfortunately very little, if any at all, that has been performed in the name of religion has been of a positive nature. Should we be surprised?
In the name of religion (or god) every war that has ever been fought has had a religious element. It has fomented hatred and rivalry amongst the races, suppressed individual's and various groups, and even nation's human rights. Opposed, persecuted, and even destroyed those with different ideological beliefs. And on, and on, and on, one could go.....
Would humankind be better off without the concept of religion/god? Well, it certainly couldn't be any worse off through lack of it.
About the only true words ever spoken by a WT wanker was - "Religion is a snare and a racket". Amen to that brothers?

Anybody who has made just the slightest exploration into the field of art and music history knows that religion has often been solely responsible in many periods throughout history for the cultural elevation of the arts in society.
For goodness sakes, do some reading before you post such threads. I have little patience for religion, but wallowing in cultural hooliganism is no substitute for a little patient study. The Catholic Church for example, has been until very recently at the cutting edges of sponsorship of the arts and music, all the major Renaissance artists and musicians who have shaped art and music in the Western World for example, were funded and encouraged by religion.
Religion has bough the world as much good as it has harm, hence the irony.

Yikes. Knee jerk reactionary rants do little to raise the level of conversation here, GID. You said this: The Government will do most anything the church tells it to do. At any point in time, we have the possiblity of losing what we believe in because christianity may decide that is best for us. This is horse pucky; certain administrations lean religious it is true; the foundation of american government, not culture not, but government, is separation of church and state. You sound like the radical islamites who cannot resist the culture of the west, and therefore brand it as satanic. The weakness is where in that transaction???

and no, religion has not brought the world as much good as bad. the base of religion has brought good ie: ten commandments or golden rule. but religion as a whole has brought nothing but bad to this world. war, homophobia, persecution (on either end), prejudice, and not to mention greed - a great deal of greed.
examples of these: war > just about any war has religion as a base of it. either encouraging it, or causing it. take this whole US vs Iraq thing.
homophobia > gays and lesbians are a mortal sin? so sexual preference is dictated by religion?
persecution > nazi's are a perfect example of that
prejudice > whether it's race, sex, dress or thought, religion tries to control this all to some decree
greed > hello, how much money does each and every church rake in week after week?

now, yes, they claim it's that way now. however, just wait til something you believe in gets tained as harmful to both church and government. you don't think they won't join up to eradicate it? be serious here.
if a belief or whatever comes up and the church disproves of it, and the government believes it to be threatening to their power, they will immediately listen to the church and follow what it says. of course, that doesn't necessarily mean in every occasion, but seriously, the church has loads more power than you are led to believe. and also, if the government ok's something that the church feels strongly against, you better believe there will be an uproar and the gov't WILL back down in the long run.

GID, Yes religion has caused tremendous harm. Governmants have caused tremendous harm . But why? I say because of the power involved in maintaining control. Power is the reason for the Julius Ceasars and Rupert Murdoch's of the world.
Every bit of art and music is really built on previous art and music. That's why we can still play ancient instruments because we understand their concepts.
My feelings on religion? Religion is the opium of the people. Did Lenin say that? Religion is all about the "feeling". Which is fine if you keep that feeling where it belongs ... with yourself and other believers. In China religion is allowed but proselytizing is not. I think thats good. I hope that the Alabama ten commandments stay gone. But I think the old folks praying at the courthouse is fine and they shouldn't be arrested for that. I think I'd actually like to have a conversation w/ them, they've had a long life and as a historian I'd want to interview them to learn about how they got to believe what they do.
The world isn't ready for us Bright's (the new name for atheists because we aren't anti-god since we don't believe there ever was anything but the manmade concept of godhead). So welcome to the Bright side GID.
