Well, wife got a transfer to Bend, OR.

This is good - we've been trying to move out there for a while. We're in NE Ohio now.

Only problem is....well, *I* don't have a job out there yet! Also, we need to find a place to stay, need to sell our house, have a TON of things we need to get rid of....

Uggghhhh....never moved this far before. I think most of this I can handle, but...

Well, I really am going to need a job in Oregon!

Anybody live in/around Bend and work for a company whose IT department is hiring? I have 6 years experience as a tech support rep (thus, fairly high-level) and a degree as a software engineer (so I could qualify for entry-level programming positions, as well).

Good Luck. Do you have any Logging experience? Oregon economy sucks. Bend is colder than Hillary Clinton's smile. Very pretty though...and no sales tax...but high property taxes...great hunting and fishing. Couple of world class ski resorts there. Also, if you're inclined to be an environmentalist, don't tell anyone and rip that Sierra Club sticker off your bumper. They pride themselves on their Spotted Owl recipes in that neck of the woods. And if you're originally from Caulifornya...keep it to yourself, 'cause they'll find a hundred ways to screw you. What the hell...it's an adventure!

She starts Nov 1 (or so), so she'll probably be flying out without me for a bit.

As far as selling...well, there are a couple people we know who *might* be interested, thus allowing us to skip the whole real estate broker thing (hopefully), but then we have to deal with the paperwork.

The stuff to move isn't that much - we will be selling most of the large stuff here, I think, and smaller ones on eBay. We'll probably still have to UHaul a few pieces across the country.

Need to sell my truck too, actually. We only want to take one vehicle across the country.

You might try the local school district (Bend/La Pine) or Redmond school district, or the Central Oregon Community College in Redmond. Unfortunately school funding is zilch right now, so unless they have an opening at the moment, you probably won't get in. Les Schwab Tires has their corporate office in Prineville.

But I'm more familiar with the tourist aspects of the area more than anything else. I can tell you where to visit an ice cave, a lava castle, get good huckleberry ice cream cones, go boating in a lake inside a volcanic crater, stand at the edge of a deep gorge, walk for over a mile in a lava tube, see where a river flows out of a mountain, or go rock climbing in one of the worlds top attractions for climbers. Rent Rooster Cogburn and the Lady for a good idea of the scenery there.

    Bend!? Cold?!?

Maybe in the winter (which is good).

    I'm from NE Ohio, remember?

The average and low temperatures (visiting www.weather.com) are virtually a carbon-copy of our current weather. It's actually a little warmer than here. Only REAL difference is that it is a LOT dryer. They get roughly 1/3 our rainfall and much less snow.

I know Oregon isn't huge on Californians (don't blame them based on the very few I've met), but I wouldn't say Bend isn't environmentalist. They have two Wild Oats stores (organic and environmental-friendly grocery stores). We are very excited about this - we only have 1 here and it's about half an hour drive. Two in the same city is....cool....

The city has two brewpubs, too. An outdoor mall (which you just never see in Ohio), where my wife will be working...etc.

It actually looks pretty cool. (And we've travelled to the high desert region when we were out there - only got as far as Sisters, where I might agree with your assessment, but Bend is a much larger city and a little bit further in. The wife's aunt loves it there.)

    I hear ya - that's what I've been hearing.

I do have a lot of qualifications, and I work (relatively) cheap, so I'm hopeful. I may end up having to work retail (which is growing like mad in Bend) for a bit. Wouldn't be too hard on us, we live pretty simply.

You guys are all mean, mean, mean.

Bend is a beautiful place. Kind of desert-y. Sisters is one of my favorite towns in Oregon, and an easy commute to Bend. There are major environmentalists down there, it's kind of a half granola/tree hugger town. The other half are the huge truck/chainsaw/four-wheeling crowd.

Bend has a bit of IT and High-Tech stuff going on. I've known of several people who have gone down there (I'm in Portland) to work for Tech companies. You'll love it there. It's worth the move. The weather is more extreme in Bend than in NW Oregon of course, but probably not more so than Ohio. Lots of snow in the Winter, lots of sun in the Summer. Great sports and activities year round.

Lucky you, and Good luck with the job hunt. Things are starting to open up around here a little bit in the Tech sector.

P.S. Not you, Swan, you are sweet, sweet, sweet.
