I am sick of non-designers tell ME how to design! (venting time)

I do not have a lot of creative free-reign at my "stable" job-I have to cater to low modem speeds (I am talking about web deveolopment here) and that is fine, low resolution-fine, I can do all that. My business I have, I have more creative free-reign because when I make a design, 90% of the time, the client loves it...they can say a couple words to me and I WILL make exactly what they want to see. I charge $45/hour for my work and I have a lot of satisfied customers.

I am an artist, this is what I do, I take a lot of pride in my work. So when my brother comes to me and tells me that he and this other guy have a hardware review business, I knew EXACTLY what I was going to make - for FREE for him, he is my bro. So I make this incredible template with the best of my work. I know that only higher-end computer users are going to go to a computer MOD site...that is the audience, hell I know his audience better than he does, ITS A MOD SITE FOR CHRIST SAKE! So, I make this cool site with a nice flash title...And it still loads fast. But you know what? Nothing but critisism coming from both these guys. They are not web developers, they are not even close to being artists...did I mention I am making one of the biggest sites I have ever made, for them, for free? CRIPES! Lets the proffessionals do their work! *sigh*

He does critisize me a LOT. He is my only sibling that talks to me and visits, and doesn't buy into the JW shunning bullshit...and he has stuck up for me an aweful lot to my relatives...but he is so stubborn sometimes, he is a know-it-all and would probably critisize the John Mayer about his singing abilitiy! He does not know when to realize that and expert in a certain field...will know more than HIM in that certain field. I have been in college for 3 years for this field and will be in it for 5 more years. *sigh* It is so frustrating sometimes.

His comment when I showed him a picture of a house my S/O and I are planning on purchasing in a year? "You won't afford that"

I am in the process of putting up my actual artwork in addition to my graphics art and works for my new media classes
Funny thing is, is I have been so busy MAKING AN INDEPENDANT FILM...haha so I think thats a good excuse for myself being too busy...
Well, the site loads really REALLY slow including my photography, I plan on working on that, making it faster-loading, all that damn DHTML I put in, so be patiant.

My S/O and I have a business site, http://www.jekesolutions.com still being worked on. Most of the business we got was actually from word of mouth, I think maybe one client we have was reffered from our site...so we do not work on it so often :(

I understand your frustration ... truly as Nina said the fact that your are his sister have something to do with that ... but also the fact that you've worked for free (both) somehow people think that when you work for free you won't give the best (it psychological - not everyone of course) It can also be because your brother don't want to recognise that you can be the best somewhere he will always find something wrong !!! (also psychological)

Next time you might try this : Ok I'll do the job and will tell you how much time and technic I've put in it ... if you "really" do like it I will give it to you for free ... If not you will have to pay 45$/H !!! I don't have time to lose for bullshiters who don't know what it is all about ... cause I'm a professional and I'd rather work for those who are able to recognised it and pay the duty !!!

It is still YOUR WORK ... YOU CAN TAKE IT BACK !!! If they bother you too much JUST TAKE IT BACK !!! You might use it for an other business-man/woman who will pay for IT
And to not get frustrated toe much ... Remember also that "Design" will alway be a question of taste.

Most people understand the concept that a person won't be in business long if working for free.

If they want your work without giving their money - ask if they're willing to barter, as in - it's time to have your windows washed, whatever. If they're not willing to barter ---- then they're just cheap.

We run a store, and had to do the same. We've not lost any family over it. We have lost family over the jw shunning.......but then, that's God speaking.

eisenstein: I do live in Maine, I live in Bangor which is near the coast kind of...the coast is much better, Portland is pretty and so is Kennebunk (and port), Camden is another lovely place. Those places are very expensive though. Perhaps when my business expands years down the road, I might move there, I have thought about that a lot...very pretty there.

frenchbabyface: You are right, its a good idea to do, maybe he will appreciate my work when he learns how much $$$ it could have cost him (my guess is a good $500 just for the template...no other work has been done yet, so it would have been even more $$$!

Six: Thats right, those non-artist types just do not get it ;) They do not understand artistic genius when it smacks them in the face...can we smack people in the face? Probably not :(
