We're kind of fortunate in that the fast food in our local vicinity is quite poor. Greasy chips, chewy kebabs, minging pizzas etc...

There was an old chinese family that had a chip shop that was *fantastic* but they have retired and the people who have it now are not as good. There's an excellent chinese takeaway but it's about 10 - 15 minutes drive away.

A few nights ago, we got a menu pushed through the letter-box for a new takeaway opened: Turkish

"What the hell" we thought "may as well give it a try" (the pictures looked nice) and ordered something to be delivered expecting the usual fare (ie. nothing like the pictures)

Wow ! Only the *best* kebab I've ever had ! Nice fresh salad and beautiful delicious meat.

Now we're doomed ... I want a kofte / shish / chicken / steak / istanbul / donner / charcoal special (I'm working my way through the menu) kebab every night !!

They go so well with beer

Think it's best to wait until the day after before passing judgement on the quality of any kebab.......

Er...what's "bad" about reasonably fat free meat, with a lot of salad, wrapped in Lebanese bread? Sound pretty balanced to me!

From one of our local Kebab franchises:

Ali Baba has three ?killer? competitive advantages, which are based on demonstrable fact as opposed to marketing hype, and which makes the Franchise desirable to people from all walks of life:

    1. Its food offering is amongst the healthiest and most nutritious fast food available anywhere. Unlike the majors, Ali Baba?s food typically has a low fat content (less than 10%), a high protein and fibre content, and a ?balanced? amount of carbohydrates. ?Our unique and proprietary bread wrap is bulky enough to satisfy those who want the taste and texture of a bread roll, but it constitutes a significantly lower proportion of the overall volume of the food offering? said Mr Marjan.
    2. It offers a unique and sensational taste, flowing from its proprietary marinades and spices which were originally enthusiastically welcomed ? and are now being sought out - by the market. A wide variety of natural herbs and spices have been blended for the purpose of delighting the taste buds, and one or two have even been included specifically because they also enhance digestion. ?What?s the point of providing an enjoyable meal if the net result is that the patron suffers from indigestion or ?after-taste? for a couple of hours afterwards??

Sounds delicious! I don't know that I've ever had carry-out kebabs - you mean like the ones on a stick?

Here in America, when it comes to fast food, you have your choice of:

Burgers from Wendys, burgers from McDonalds, burgers from Burger King, Burgers from White Castle, Burgers from Rallys....

Dan, resident of Columbus Ohio, which has the highest fast-food restaraunt-per-capita ratio in the USA, and 99% of it is f*cking hamburgers

No, that's a shish kebab. The kebabs we're talking about are slices of meat from a lump of formed meat (beef or lamb) on a rotissery in fromt of a gas flame. As the outer layers are cooked, they are sliced off and put on a layer of salad that tops a piece of lebanese flat bread. After your sauce of choice is added, it's wrapped up, crisped against the gas burner and put in a bag, from which you then eat yon delicate morsel. Yum!
