What Bugs You The Most About Jehovah's Witnesses?

And another thing..... I detest how they have through the years made a virtue of fiscal irresponsibility --``don't go to college or even take classes on meeting nights;" ``no need to bother with life insurance or retirement/pension plans;" ``why tie your self down with a house and a mortgage?" not to mention the tragic postponing of medical interventions and operations during the run-up to 1975; and then simply tut-tutting when the naive JWs who were dumb enough to take this all seriously experience financial straits or even ruin in as they unexepctedly age and come to terms with their mortality.

I can't tell you how much I missed out on because it was Tuesday or Thursday night and we HAD to go to the meeting. Those nights are now reserved for whatever I want to do. I can watch some of the best TV shows. I remember people asking me if I liked a certain #1 program and because of the meetings, I never saw it. I felt like a dork. Or how many concerts and events were missed out on because i had to put "Jehovah God" first. It's always been about putting the organization first.

Thank God for VCRs, eh, min. I tape all my shows anyway to cut through the commercials.

There are several congregations in this area. No one blinks an eye to know that someone went to the concert/event and attended another congregation's meeting another night. Concert, Tuesday night, go to a Wednesday book study. Concert Thursday night, go to a Tuesday night TMS/SM. I can remember conductors adjusting the starting time of the CBS so they could see their TV show later at 8:00. They disappeared right after the end of the meeting at 8 p.m.

Re Blondie and Minimus' meeting attendance comments: It also bugs me that it wasn't enought to go to all the meetings; they had to compel you to go only to those of the congregation assigned to the territory in which you lived. If you sought to attend others for reasons of convenience, you're branded as selfish/spiritually immature.

Now, my wife goes Monday-Wednesday and Sunday (rotating hours), whereas my two married daughters, sons-in-law and grandson go Tuesday-Thursday and Sunday (always) at nine a.m. in the adjoining congregation, but my wife is too guilt-ridden and initimidated to change over so as to align her schedule with theres. Result: incessant conflict and major curtailment of opportunities to spend family time together tha``worldly" (read ``normal" here) people take for granted. .

We had brothers working all kinds of crazy shifts and trying to make their meetings in whichever congregation they could get to. They got counseled about going only to 1 congrgation and if need be to look for a different job!

That they think they are right, all the time, without ever hearing or reading an opposing viewpoint or evidence.

Oh the hypocrisy of it all.... the lip serivce they pay to ``the vital importance of the meetings, the need to attend regularly at all costs and how much is harmed spritually by not being there." When I was in Bethel, we were assigned to Watchtower farm for construction work on teh first expansion, we were laughed at by our work overseers (slave drivers) if we protest that our work schedules (pretty much sun-to-sun 7 days a week) prevented us from attending meetings. Bethelites have generally elevated missing meetings to a fine art.

Very few even bothered to bring meeting clothes when assigned to construction duty there, and the only meetings-- which we attended in jeans and tee shirts-- was the Monday night family WT study. After it was over, we'd get together over a six-pack on the porch. There was a weekly truck departing the farm every Saturday morning for Brooklyn Bethel and everyone would lobby hard for a ride back to the city, for no other reason than to get out of being asked to work on the weekend.
