You're not a bitch and that is OKAY. I'm not either and when I try to be no one takes me seriously and they turn against me. Be your nice self because that's who you are, doll. BUT do learn to be assertive. LadyLee made some good suggestions there for assertive responses you can make.
Something I do: if I know I am going to be put in a situation where I need to be assertive I think ahead and even practice what I will say. Otherwise keep an arsenal of pat replies.
Some people are natural bitches and they command respect when they must act. You aren't a natural bitch but you can command respect by gaining the reputation that you won't allow people to walk all over you. People learn instinctively to manipulate people who cannot assert themselves properly. Tell yourself that you will not allow yourself to be manipulated any longer. Stand up for yourself. You don't have to be a bitch to do that. The world has enough bitches. We can use more strong but kind people. There are never too many of those.

Dear Viv: When I was 18 I had a girl friend from Texas. She was Willy Nelson's house keeper. She came to Florida to see her granddad and we hooked up. Anyway, she was very nice looking and had a very nice frame, the local girls would give her crap and say real nasty things to her. She would just smile and act like nothing was said. I thought, and still do, she was one class act! And I still can't control myself as well as she could 30 years ago! She is a professor at some college in Texas now.
