    No, I just use polish.

edited to add: Sorry Sheila, I just saw the post question and had this picture in my head of someone grinding down their teeth with a grinding machine....and came up with a stupid reply. In no way did I mean to make a joke of your problem.

My ex-wife had TMJ from grinding her teath at night. She had so much pain we considered surgery. After finding out what that was all about and with no guarantee, she tried the mouthpiece. The pain stopped and after some time she stopped using it with no other problems that I know of. Give it a try, its low cost and can't hurt.

yes, and it definitely reduced the headache, pain in my neck. But I HATE the thing. Lots of reasons. I rarely wear it, only when I've been having regular tension headaches. Then I get the damn thing out and wear it for a few nights until the muscles unclench a little. The problem is, you will still clench/grind your teeth even with a mouthpiece, so you need to get to the bottom of the problem. The good thing about a mouthpiece is, even though you still clench/grind, it takes pressure off the roots of the teeth. Clenching can cause the tooth root to be avascular, the lack of blood flow can make the teeth loosen and weak. It's probably important that you get and wear one for now--even though I don't take my own advice. HA!

Ideas? Well, some say that grinding your teeth is a psycho-somatic result of keeping your mouth shut and not saying the things you need to say. Others claim that is it mal-adjustment in the cranial bones--especially of the mandible. In that case, cranio-sacral work from a trained and certified LMT might help. It won't be covered by insurance though, and a mouthpiece might.

Personally, I think it is # 1. I started grinding my teeth when I started being unhappy with the Org. Once I made the decision to never go back, it lessened up. But I've noticed when I have dealings with my Dub family, it gets worse again.

    Good luck, save your teeth.

    Under stress?

Yes, maybe because you should be kinder, and more understanding..and not so selfish.

Not saying selfish is a bad thing, when it comes to your family, but have compassion for others...

I've got that problem too. A few years ago it got so bad that I literally forced my jaw slightly out of place during the night. It was not completely dislocated, but it was bad enough that I could not completely close my mouth. It took a prescription of muscle relaxers and several days of trying before I was able to work my jaw back into place

My dentist made a special dental appliance for me that prevented me from grinding my teeth. Maybe you can look into getting one.

Sheila, if you happen to be taking an anti-depressant, that may be the cause of your grinding. After I started taking Effexor, I ground my teeth so badly that I actually started to wear them down in the back, and I had KILLER headaches. Sometimes my jaws would throb all day long.

The medical term for this is "bruxism" and it shows up as a potential side effect of several anti-depressants, but first of all, no one knows what it means and second, the doctors don't seem to mention it.

The mouthpiece works as long as you (or Thunder) don't mind you drooling all over your pillow!!

Yes I grind my teeth and clinch them. I got an appliance and chewed on it so it didn't do me much good but give it a try it may help you, I hope so! I have TMJ . . . YUCK! I agree with a lot of what Odrade has already posted. You really need to get to the bottom of what is causing you to grind your teeth or it will only get worse unfortunately :( I have to work with mine daily sometimes it's a real struggle! If I can be of any help please feel free to PM me.

I tried using "Mouth Guard" which i purchased at Osco's. It's like a mouthguard football players would use, only you dip it in boiling water then put in in your mouth, and your teeth make an impression in it. Then you have it custom designed for your mouth and teeth. I use it, and it is effective for me.
