I read that wild oregano oil, a small amount in the nose was supposed to do something for this. Anyone tried it?

As has been said, both the mucous build up and the bacteria have to be treated. For the mucous I use over the counter Mucinex (600 mg) which is nothing more than the expectorant called Guaifenesin, which has no known harmful side effects even over long term use. Use plenty of water throughout the day. For the bacteria I use over the counter Alkolol which is a combination of many healing and antiseptic oils. It is available from a pharmacy and is produced by The Alkalol Company, Taunton , Mass. USA. I usually put the Alkalol in an empty saline dispensor, relable it , and carry it with me to use throughout the day. When the sinuses become "Jammed up"(swollen) and I can't get the benifit of the Alklol, I will add over the counter Sudaphed Non Drying Sinus gels which has only Guaifenesin and Pseudoephedrine. Pseudoephedrine "shrinks" blood capillaries and prevents the swelling. I try to use the gels on an "as needed" basis and not long term. As has been said , it is important that the sinuses not dry out and that dietary considerations be observed as much as possible. I have improved at least 80% with this regimen. The only drawback is that Guaifenesin is a diuretic and because one is drinking plenty of water throughout the day one is urinating more frequently. If your a coffee drinker (another diuretic) the game gets really interesting. The regimen definitly is not for any one in the "door to door" work.

Thanks for the replies so far. I am sure I will try each of these suggestions over the next few days/weeks until I find something that will keep me healthier.

If anybody else has suggestions. I need them!

Jayhawk, I have also used wild Oregano oil. It helped somewhat, but my condition is caused by symptoms of immunological chronic urticaria , so a combination of zyrtec, singular, allegra and salt water nasal washes are what I need to combat sinusitus. To tell the truth , for immediate relief (like I said before) the warm salt water snort is the best.

Have you tried Zicam? It is homeopathic, over-the-counter. It has worked well for me.

Is zicam a cure, or does it control it?

    Hi, Jayhawk,

Sorry to hear you are having health problems. Nasal irrigation can really help out with conditions such as yours. WaterPic has a nasal irrigation attachment specifically for this purpose. The easy way is to mix up 1 quart of cooled boiled water with 3 teaspoons of canning salt (any grocery store) and 2 teaspoons baking soda. It will keep in the fridge for one week, and you only use about one cup at a time.

Heat to body temperature in the microwave just the portion you will be using, pour into WaterPic, use low spray setting, leaning slightly forward, spray into nostrils a little at a time, allowing to run out between sprays.

Sounds absolutely gross. But it can be a lifesaver. Literally.

    Good luck and God bless.

I had what I thought was really bad sinus, until a visit to a nose-and-throat specialist revealed that I had nasal polyps. Up til then, I had been taking Claradyne and all the other sinus products, to no avail. The dr I had been seeing thought I had sinus, but I knew there was something more to my problem, so I asked (basically had to beg the ignorant dr) to see a specialist.

Nasal polyps are growths in the nose that prevent mucus from being naturally expelled, thus causing a buildup of both mucus and bacteria. Some days are ok, other days I wish I could cut off my nose to drain it

You need a referral to see a specialist, but it's well worth it. The nasal polyps will never go away permanently, because they lodge their roots right into your brain, so the specialists can only cut them away to the base. Thus they will grow back within 6 months or so. There is medication you can take to shrink the polyps, but it is a strong steroid that has to be taken in small doses otherwise it can damage your kidneys.

    Good luck!

You might want to try nasal irrigation using one of those little pots that look like a small watering can.

It might be convenient to do this in the shower stall before you shower until you get used to the procedure - you don't want to blow a snootful of saline and snot all over your clothes the first time you try it!

The first couple of rinses should be saline solution to simply get the mucus out of the way, but you might want to try a final rinse with DILUTED hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is normally sold at 3% concentration, which is too strong for putting up your nose - dilute one part of peroxide with at least two parts water.

Hydrogen peroxide is the chemical that your white blood cells make to destroy invading bacteria.

You might also try gargling with diluted peroxide.
