Are You Hooked On a Soap?

I can't believe they still refer to these shows as "soaps", but yes, I'll be the first to admit that I tape one soap show regularly, and am quite up on all the goings on. My favorite, and the only one I watch, is The Bold and The Beautiful on CBS. I have watched it since the very first episode, and that has been a very long time!

And, sometimes, I suppose I can even admit to being obsessive. This is especially so, if the story line is at a very good place, and the power goes off during my day at work, and it doesn't get taped. There have been times when the show is just getting too rediculous, and I purposely tune it out. Once I tuned it out for over a year, as a form of self discipline.

Is anyone else a B&B watcher? If not, what is your favorite show?

I watch that one! Not everyday, but sometimes I tape it, if it gets exciting. Right now it is getting too predictable and I am disappointed in the story line (Brooke and Nick). I was surprised by that, because I guess I missed it and wondered why they were acting so guilty. Now I just don't like where it seems to be going.

It's on at my lunchtime (home) so I time it to watch almost everyday. That's the only one. Years ago I must have watched 6 of them regularly. I felt guilty too when the conventions made a big issue of them. I reasoned that nighttime shows and many movies were worse and they didn't deal with those. (back then they didn't)

I have roomies that are obssessed with Passions so I've seen bits and pieces of it. The show is pretty wild and different than most soaps. I don't get into soaps like I do survivor.

    Hi Mulan,

Like you, I remember when the WT made such an issue out of women watching soaps. It was a sign of spiritual weakness to tune into such "trash".

My first introduction to the soap world was when I was probably five years old. I wasn't in school yet, and I remember that every day around noon, my mom would take us kids next door to watch the four 15 min. soaps. We didn't have a TV in those days. She was really hooked, but wasn't a JW then. She was also hooked on those Love Story magazines. When the JW's knocked at our door, when I was thirteen, life changed very radically.

I thought the whole "quick" story line about Ridge's "death" was just over the top..and then when Nick's only help to console Brooke, was through sex, well that was rediculous. Are we really supposed to buy the fact that Brooke was so grief stricken that sex with another man was going to help her get over the love of her life?. Ridge is not that great of an actor, really. But he and Brooke do have this chemistry going for them. They just never seem to ever have a normal relationship in this soap, and after so many years, and kids later, it doesn't appear that this "marriage" is going to run smoothe either. Sometimes, I could just kick Brooke in the butt. And now she's pregnant yet again!!

Also, to bring back Macy in the far-fetched story line of a couple years ago, only to have her "die" again, so she can move onto another soap. Rather silly. But I know these stories are just that. Silly imitations of "reel" life. I have fun fussing at them every evening. Even my husband knows all the ends and outs and we discuss it sometimes. He says I should write for the show, as I seem to know the characters and plots so well.

I won't watch them normally. However, I have an actor friend who lives in NYC who has a recurring role on one of them. When he's on (a couple of times a month), I'll tune in just to see him.

I'm not hooked or anything, but years ago, when I was in school, I'd come home to find my mom watching soaps. I started to get to know some of the characters.

What amazed me was, decades later, I tuned in to one, The Young And The Restless, and saw some of the same actors/actresses that played the show two decades (plus) before.

I started watching As the World Turns when I was about 10 or 11. I would be home alone, with a cold or flu, and there wasn't much else on. I kept track of the characters a few times a year and in the summers. I will still watch it from time to time when I'm bored in the afternoon, just to see who is still on the show, but am not hooked anymore.
