I need more proof than that - call me doubting Thomas... tell ya' what... throw a lunar eclipse in there this month and you've made a believer outta me!

Interesting thread. It took awhile but I read it all. Both these guys are arguing the same point: one is saying the universe came from nothing. The other is saying it came from a deity, who came from nothing. The story is the same though the characters (or lack there of) are different. The universe is pregnant with unimaginable wonder. To think that this happened out of the atheist's non-intelligent nothingness and barrenness seems quite foolish. To think that it came from the theist's deity spoken of and described in the Bible -- is even more foolish. j

Interesting post. Call me naive, but I've never heard that point of view before, - or perhaps - I just haven heard it put quite that way. If the universe didn't come out of non-intelligent nothingness, or from the God of the Christian Bible, how do you think it came to exist? I'm not looking for a debate; I'm just curious.

Hmmm... I think I can pull it off... Instead of just "this month", how about tomorrow?

There is a theory which states that if you add up all the energy and mass in the universe and add it to the negative energy of gravity you end up with a sum total of zero. Basically gravity is the opposite of energy and matter. What this means is that the universe as a whole lot of nothing.

There are an infinite number of universes where there is nothing. Of course, there is no one there to ask the question. This universe happened to have something, which resulted in us, who eventually asked this question.

These folks are attempting to prove something using language that was not created to do what they want it to do. It's like trying to send quantum physics mathematics on your short-messaging cellphone.

In other words, it's so much wanking.

You might want to read this short excerpt, by A.J. Ayer, in Language, Truth, and Logic.

History does not record anywhere at any time a religion that has any rational basis. Religion is a crutch for people not strong enough to stand up to the unknown without help. But, like dandruff, most people do have a religion and spend time and money on it and seem to derive considerable pleasure from fiddling with it. Robert Anson Heinlein.

The God of the OT who appears in burning bushes and enjoys the smell of burning foreskins and smears dung on the faces of Israel's enemies - no.

Why is there something instead of nothing? Hell I don't know. Life is so strange. The more I search for answers, the more unanswerable the questions seem.

I agree quite a bit with this thought.

There probably isn't any ultimate answer, at least not one that can be expressed in words. The more we try to understand reality, the more infinite and complex it becomes.
