I knew a gay JW who was doing the "celibacy thing" in order to remain a JW in good standing. He made the mistake of telling someone in his congregation whom he thought he could trust about his sexual orientation. From that day forward, elders staked themselves out in front of his house, waiting for him to come home with a "worldly" man so they could bring him before a committee. He remained chaste, following the JW rules, and it never happened. This did not deter the elders, though. The stakeouts continued. Finally, in exasperation, the gay JW went to court and filed a restraining order against the body of elders in his congregation for stalking him. He was disfellowshipped as soon as the court order was received at the Kingdom Hall, even though he had done nothing wrong to merit expulsion.

SFJim, unfortunately, he did the worst thing, he made the elders look bad in public.
Blondie (wonder if the elders spent as much time in the "ministry" looking for the sheep)

I flicked a cigarette butt out the window of my car at a group going out in service from my cong. It is a miracle they either did'nt notice the smoldering tobacco stick, or they did'nt notice ME. If they would have known it was me they would have approached me about it. Whewwww...That was a close one, but funny when I think about it. I've since kicked the habit btw. Which leads me to ask; What would the elders do if I told 'em that I went through a period of smoking, but then I quit and have refrained from puffing the offensive fags since? What do you think?
Thanks,
Integ.

They'd probably call you into a committee meeting to try to get you to 'fess up to all details, and then try to determine if you're repentant and want to be part of Jehovah's "clean organization" or not.

What are the odds?
If only 1 in 1,000 do so then out of 100,000 congs that's 100.
If only 1 in 100 do then that is 1,000 that do.
If 1 in 4 hides a ped as silentlambs estimates then the odds are much higher: 100,000/4=25,000.
If some of those that don't hide a ped but hide a serial murderer as we know they also do, then it could be more than 1 in 25,000.
Would you be aware if had happened to you? Not normally for they would do everything possible to keep you from knowing.
Expenses? The stuff is available dirt-cheap now. Annually the holdings exceed $2,000,000,000.
Personal anecdotes are plentiful. I believe it does go on.

My best friend had the elders spy on her. She was at her boyfriend's house (unbeliever), they ended up having sex in the living room. Three elders watched them through a window. I wish they had been arrested. At any rate, the voyeurs got their kicks, I mean evidence, and called her into committee. After it was over one of them pulled her to one side and said, "in 30 years of being married my wife has NEVER been in the top position while we were having sex." (thanks for sharing)... guess they thought that really made her a hussy. If they only knew. I think the old guys can't watch porn so this is better for them.
What a bunch of losers!

Of course, there's always the "stayed overnight" rule. I know of plenty of Witness women who spent the night with a friend sitting outside their ex-husband's home, so they could testify that he spent the whole night with a woman. I don't consider them aggressors or spies... I consider them victims of the Watchtower's ridiculous rules.
A sweet 60 year old sister in my congregation was forced to do this in order to divorce her unbelieving, abusive mate. Forcing people to resort to this demeaning, and possible illegal action is sickening beyond belief.
Sorry it's not about elder spying, but I just had to say this. This sister's case has been dragging on for several years. i want to bite nails everytime I think about it!!

They tap into your telephones, too.
Mini, ya may joke, however, I know of instances where they've done this.

years ago. back in 50-70's i have kown of it. A family member actually did this exact thing so they could obtain a "
scriptual" divorce.I know if u check into a hospital, they will pop in and check on u to make sure u are not taking blood. However with the new privacy rules for patients, it might be harder.
generally if u are no one to them, and have not been attending meetings and all, they won't bother u. But if u are well liked and high profile and all, they will keep tabs on u.
