Craig....your experience is just like mine...and you express well what it was like to be in the borg in the late '70s - '80s. I jumped ship in the early '90s and so like you i only learned of the change after the fact, but it stunned me just the same. I remember in the late '80s how old the 1914 generation seemed, and yet there was still the Soviet bloc where JWs were banned, and I couldn't understand how the good news was to be preached in all the nations before the end, and how we could be "bloodguilty" for failing to go out in field service when there were whole nations of ppl who don't get to hear the good news of the kingdom at all. That "bloodguilty" doctrine made armageddon seem very far away indeed. But that teaching on "this generation" was solid as rock, the ultimate proof of the end coming so soon, it made sense, seemed very clear....and the JWs were the only ppl on this PLANET who understood that....so obviously they had to have the Trooth (nice circular reasoning).....so when they did an Emily Litella like in 1995....i'm sure it had an impact second only to 1975's no show....

I grew up around those times as well. My baby sister need not go to school, now her son starts school next month, etc...

The 'This Generation' was pushed, a lot of people thought 1984 would be the time, 70 years and so on. I guess we really believed it at the time. I remember the local council building a new sports centre which was scheduled for completion in 1989, I remember thnking that it was a shame we would never get to use it.

Oh I definitely remember the 1984 date. I first heard about it at the book study, a number of the brothers were gossiping about it. Speculating on the shakeup at Bethel as a sign of the end. My first thought was oh goodie I won't have to go to high school....autumn 1984, when Armageddon was rumored to happen, was to be the start of my freshmen year. But as time wore on it wasn't mentioned anymore and so i kinda forgot about it and wasn't surprised to see it come and go. They were even more tentative on 1986. Then I left before all the speculation at the end of the Cold War. My mom was a real estate agent. She tried hard to convince the elders to purchase a new kingdom hall throughout the '80s....our current one was badly overcrowded, aging, somewhat far away, and they had a great property they were considering, but the elders decided against it, because Armageddon was so very close...and my mom was incredulous that they didn't even want to prepare for the future just in case. It wasn't until half a decade later they were forced to get a new hall and by then, with property prices, they had to settle on a hall about five or six times the distance away as their current hall, with quite a long drive to and fro.

WT always damns those who leave as serving to a date...not serving Jehovah with a right heart, etc.... however while that seems true on the surface it overlooks the real issue.... we was lied to! we are lead to believe that WT alone had the inside track to JHVH and as his mouth peice would have the straight scope things like this... JWs being wrong over and over again about this and other issues only shows that no such inside track ever existed and that the WT had nothing but opinion on "the truth" and no way to really show they were any better than the others out there claiming to be speaking for God and being called Liars by the WT.

One main thing that always bothered me about the whole "business" was its lack of real world verification. There were always plenty of EXCUSES why there was no actual evidence for anything supernatural going on, why FAITH was important and that real world evidence would not make any difference... yet is that not how all con artists need to work? they must baffle you with Bull$#!+ so that you do not catch on that you are giving up your value in time and money for a pie dream in the sky which you will not know you were even cheated out of if it never materializes.

Religion is the greatest con game ever invented..... I give you words and you give me money on the hope that my words lead to fulfillments later....after you die, for the most part.

Remember if you Kiss Hank's ass you will get a million dollars, but if you don't he will beat the crap out of you--Karl.

    what happeend in 1995??????????/

one of the biggest gossip events for this fashionista ever!!

    June 27, 1995 - Hugh Grant spectacle

Another actor made headlines a month after Reeve's accident - - Hugh Grant ("Four Weddings and a Funeral," "The Englishman Who Went Up A Hill And Came Down A Mountain") was arrested in Hollywood for having a very public liaison with Divine Brown, an alleged prostitute.

Grant took to the talk shows to apologize for his behavior, and won a few accolades for being honest and taking responsibility for his actions.

Application of Matthew 24:34 to 1914 Generation:

"Some of that "generation (of 1914)" could survive until the end of the century. But there are many indications that "the end" is much closer than that!" (1984 ? Watchtower, Mar. 1984)

"Today, a small percentage of mankind can still recall the dramatic events of 1914. Will that elderly generation pass away before God saves the earth from ruin? Not according to Bible prophecy, ?When you see all these things,? Jesus PROMISED, ?know that he is near at the doors. Truly I say to you that THIS generation will by no means pass away until all these things occur.? - Matthew 24:33,34." (1992 ? Watchtower, May 1992)

Of the generation in Matthew 24:34, "...apparently refers to the peoples of earth (now) who see the sign of Christ presence but fail to mend their ways." (1995 ? Watchtower, Nov. 1995)

    FALSE!

Jesus spoke of His own generation, not those of 1914, as supposed here. Approximately 40 years after this word was spoken, it was fulf i l led in the des t ruct ion of Jerusalem (70 A.D.). We are 90 years removed from 1914, and that generation is almost (if not completely) gone.

"1994 now the youngest of that generation would be 80, still conceivable that there would be some living still ???, but the Watchtower gave up in 1995 and threw in the towel and came up with "new light" stating the term generation could mean any length of time, "

As RDW mentioned, yes, I think they could have "toughed it out" a little longer.

"For the Society to make this change so casually about "this generation" in 1995 betrayed the trust that many had in the Watchtower Society. "

    Mizpah, exact-a-mundo!!!!

"Even as a young boy I can remember being taught the mantra:

    Jerusalem fell in 607 BCE.
The gentile times were 7 x 360 years (a day for a year) minus no year zero = 1914 CE.
Armageddon would begin before the generation that saw the events of 1914 were all dead. "

Number 6, right!!! I grew up in the "Let God Be True" days, of the 50's, did the "Truth" book in the 60's. I did bail before 1975, so I didn't see the 1995 bubble bursting. I also didn't ratify the early 80's bAPTISMAL vOW changes and pledge allegiance to the WTS.

And zen nudist sums it up:

"WT always damns those who leave as serving to a date...not serving Jehovah with a right heart, etc.... "

Agreed, that excuse from WTS is BS:

"however while that seems true on the surface it overlooks the real issue.... we was lied to!! we are lead to believe that WT alone had the inside track to JHVH and as his mouth peice would have the straight scope things like this..."

There you have it: these folks have said it very elegantly. A few clever individuals made something interesting up and it finally fizzled. These thoughts are proof positive that THERE IS NO hOLY sPIRIT IN THE WTS!!!!!!!!!
