Saw it tonight. Seemed a bit hammy at times, but overall I thought it was very good. When Tom Guiry's foot came down on the child's face, I was expecting the camera to cut away, and I was shocked when it didn't; half the theater gasped. Emotional impact goes a lot farther than mere gore.
The sheer tragic import of the story was very well realized, I thought. The movie could have easily verged into nihilism, but despite the overwhelming sense of inevitable tragedy, it never seemed senseless or uncentered.
The movie isn't light entertainment; the emotional intensity pretty much never lets up. The actors carry it wonderfully, however.
Anyone else see it?
