    RAVES!

Some friends and I through a Rave about 3 years ago in a field near Austin INT. Airport. What a blast that was! 42 DJ's from as far away as LA, NYC, and London. Three tents, one the size of a football field.

We had almost 20 thousand kids show up. It was the largest Rave to that date in Texas history. It made front page headlines on the Austin American Statesman Sunday morning. . It was named "Massive Attack". Anyone here remember it? Around 2 or 3 am, it started raining. My motorhome (the office) ended up with 3 inch deep mud on the carpet. It was one of the funnest events of my life...really.

At the end of the show, we counted out almost $350,000 USD. The investors, got most of it, my friend the real promoter got a new car outta the deal..... I got my motorhome cleaned, a lot of good memories and some new friends.

Some shrewd enterprising JW is making some bucks out of those raves over there. They are addicting. It doesn't surprise me that repressed socially starved dubbie kids are flocking to them like flies to the flame.

I have never heard of JW raves, but it wouldn't surprise me. I did hear about lots of JW parties with drinking and sex. The kids thought it was OK because there were only JWs there, and they made sure their parents didn't hear (or so they thought).

I personally think that the parents did know about some of it, and turned a blind eye as long as there were only witness kids involved. If a parent doesn't know about it ( because they don't want to), they don't have to get elders involved and their kids won't be reprimanded or DF. If they are DF, they might leave "the lie" forever. Being in denial keeps family relations much smoother and easier.

I remember a CO going off at an elder/MS meeting about the friends renting nightclubs and having JW nights. It was wrong, wrong, wrong. I remember thinking, why? If only JWs can attend, what's the big deal.

I remember a group of JWs got together and started a band. They got some gigs around town at some bars. Once word leaked out, the elders with the backing of the CO squashed that pretty damn quick. So these same guys decided to rent a recreation center once a month or so and play there. They would invite anyone to come and even play along if they could play an instrument. All they asked was that everyone chip in something to help pay for the rental of the building(not unlike renting a gym to play basketball). Any overage of money would go to the contribution box at the hall. That got squashed too. I remember hearing one line of reasoning was "that it wasn't right to charge the friends to come watch them play worldly music". Another was that, "it's not fair to those that can't play an instrument or can't afford to chip in".

Of course, I bought the company line and never questioned the banning of these fun things. Now, though, I feel stupid for ever letting anyone control me enough into never seeing the stupidity of it all.

Sex in toilets, in the car park, in cars and even people getting a little too tactile on the dance floor is apparently quite common. Drugs are used and alcohol flows freely

wow... well that may come down on them eventually if someone 'tells' what is going on.

I went to a couple of JW formals where there was 300-400 in attendance. The music was very good.. (in my mind) R&B, Hip Hop, Jazz... and nothing bad went on as far as I could see....

but I was reprimanded by the elders for attending. They said too many people.. and reminded me of WT articles about large gatherings...

Hey Shamus, it's ironic that you bring up Ministry. I brought Psalm 69 to work today for my listening pleasure! MINISTRY ROCKS!

Personally, I've been out too long to be aware of any JW raves. I was also a social outcast. I was far too weird for any of the other JW teens to hang out with me. I got squealed on for telling a racist joke. I had conduct problems when all the JW teens would go to the rollerrink on Sunday evenings. It kinda pissed me off that I couldn't fit in no matter how hard I tried. I just gave up on it all and fit in nicely with worldly people.

Why the terror about JWs gathered in groups of any size for any social purpose? I mean, I know it's about control, but what's the "scriptural basis?"
