Eh at least we know they aren't real dubbies behaving in such a manner...eheh it sucks when young people have to live double lives, but I say more power to them!

These events were known to be happening when I was a JW living in the UK. At least back as 1994 the WTS in London was aware of these. At one CA in 1994 the CO stated that hundreds of young JWs were living 'double' lives and attending these Witness organized raves. There were held all over the UK and youngs JWs were traveling 100s or miles to attend on Saturday night and some were still managing to get back home on Sunday to attend meetings.

The CO siad that those who wanted to attend these raves could do so but "we" didn't one them in the org anymore...(much applause).

I'd never heard of such parties for jw's. I may have to rethink my stance on never going back!

I was pretty surprised when I heard about this. Witness kids actually get into this sort of thing? I must come from more of a rural redneck town than I thought, if something like that happened in my area the elders would go absolutely bonkers, the R&F would faint out of shock, and we would be hearing about it for years.

Now, for the most important question, can anyone direct me to the nearest rave?

I can remember a talk about these raves at a CA at Hayesbridge a few years ago. They specifically mentioned that it was around the M25 area.

We had never heard anything about them but assumed that we where too far from the London congs to be involved and that it was a general "get at the youngsters for having a bit of fun" talk.

Are they really on such a large scale?

Are they really on such a large scale?

Apparently they are. My Brother-in-law has attended one a week for the last few months and said that the place was packed.

Maybe the BBC's panorama program should make a "fly on the wall" documentory. You can almost picture a bunch of sisters in floral ankle lengh polyester frocks, static crackling, dancing around plastic book bags, checking their watches to make sure they're home at a reasonable hour. While the socially inept brothers prop up the walls watching for potential wives and getting high doing lines of pepsi.

Why the terror about JWs gathered in groups of any size for any social purpose? I mean, I know it's about control, but what's the "scriptural basis?"

They can't have dozens(or hundreds) of JWs getting together without a planned information controlled atmosphere. They know that if the friends continue to meet outside of sanctioned events that sooner or later someone will question something about the organization. That question will lead to other questions and even doubts. Those doubts will lead some, maybe a lot, to search for reasons or answers. Eventually something will be triggered and they will realize that something is bad wrong. These few that have figured out something is wrong will share it with more people at these relaxing, fun events where no elder or CO can interfere. Soon, many are questioning the legitmacy of the entire religion. Over time a ground swell of rebellion encompasses the region. It then leaks from one circuit to the next, and the next, and so on. Over the course of time(maybe not so long of a time) thousands start leaving the congregations, some vocal, others quietly. Within a few years the membership starts a steady decline. The religion is now losing money. People are not contributing or taking literature. The rebels have warned the community to not trust anyone who offers them WT literature. The corporation begins to sell off properties. National governments revoke their tax-free status. The WTS owes millions. The leaders reorganize to protect themselves from lawsuits. The religion tries to regroup and center their efforts in third world countries where the rebels have not infiltrated. The rebel network is underestimated though and eventually the thirld world people are enlightened and no longer welcome WTS missionaries. The religion retreats and claims that the end is near because of the "persecution" it is facing. The world scoffs and ignores them. They are no longer threatening to become a major religion in the free world. Their numbers keep decreasing. Eventually, several years after the last of their "governing body" members dies, the religion closes its doors for good.

All because some people wanted to get together for a skating party.

Actually part of the reasoning for not too many together at once, is that the host could then become unable to be responsible for that many people. I also remember talks about making sure the host knew who everyone was that was attending. The larger the gathering the less control there was.

When I got into 'trouble/extra cirricular activities' with a brother on a weekend of a big gathering, they tried to use that as an excuse for why one should not attend these gatherings. I told the elders that our 'hooking up' the night before everything had nothing to do with that party. It was just this brother and me.. no one else. But they were of the mind set that the party brought this brother to town! (sigh!) whew!
