Communism killed more people than Nazism. It's failed every place it's been tried.
There was an article on the BBC today I think (or yesterday? I couldn't find it) that described modern research about "equality" - our view of inequality being all about wealth is wrong, people balk at unfairness more. It's a simple fact that some people work harder than others and most people think they should be rewarded more as a result.
Communism is what happens when the people who don't want to do the work want the ones that do to work for them.
He was right about religion though.

TL;DR; Even at young school age, kids have an inbuilt desire to reward work and recognize that it's not fair to five everyone the same when not everyone works the same.
Capitalism has it's flaws but has produced better societies than communism and the issues with capitalism are usually to do with failures of oversight or misguided government intervention than the system or ideology itself.

Ironically, at the time many of my generation were leaning towards communism (i.e. in the late 1960s / early 1970s), those living under communism had already realised it was a failure. Not, of course, that they could voice those opinions too loudly!
That anything got done at all in the communist countries of Eastern Europe was due entirely to an informal (and illegal) barter economy that operated by default. (That from a work colleague who managed to defect from Romania while Ceausescu was still in charge).

In Cuba it seems to "work" okayish. I've been there myself. Although people are poor (in our view) they don't seem to mind much, they have what they need. Capitalism does increase overall wealth though. But it also needs a lot of regulations and control, otherwise (big) companies optimize for themselves (monopoly abuse) or form a cartel. It's not black/white. -

If capitalism requires "a lot of regulations and control", then communism requires that in spades! The communist countries were highly bureaucratic in nature, which was one of the things that led to their demise.
