I enjoy swing dancing because it's very creative as a social dance. You can learn a little or a lot, and enjoy it easily. My parents taught me a little bit about swing dancing when I was young. Just a few steps, but I loved it. It was enough for when I was in 6th grade and we had a 1950s week that I could help my teacher demonstrate a little bit. (It was one of those experimental classes, btw.) 2 years ago I went with my sister's family to a swing dance and picked up a little again. Then, nothing else since.

Last summer I was remembering how fun it was, and it hit me that I could learn thru video. But who would be my partner? My husband dislikes dancing--it is just because his school did not have a music program, and his sense of rhythm was not developed, so he always feels like a fool as he tries to move with the beat. Too self-conscious. He really, really doesn't want to do it. So who...?

My son fits the bill, turns out. And he really enjoys it. We've been having a good time 1-2 times a week learning new moves or practicing old ones. Just turning on a CD and cutting loose in the kitchen. He loves swing music, too! (I'm not much of an expert on it, really; just know a few tunes.)

Does anyone else here enjoy this kind of dance? Or another related dance? (I saw Frannie's thread recently--I love rock 'n roll, too, of course! I guess I'm referring to a coordinated type of dance..)

    Bebu -

I always wanted to learn to swing dance, but never met anyone that would do it with me! It's awesome your son will do it with you!

About 10 years ago I got involved with a square dancing group - oh my goodness! I had SOOO much fun - and it's great exercise, too! Wish I could find one around here, I'd do it again!

    Hi Bebu

    I love swing..

My husband and I took "ballroom dancing" for a number of years. We loved it and could cut up the dance floor pretty good. Our instructor taught us a range of different dances.

    Rock and roll jive..

    Cha-Cha and the Samba

    Three quarter waltz.

    Fox trot

A little swing and mixed in the jive.

    And some Texas two step

    sincerely

growedup, I enjoyed square dancing too in school, but I still stereotype it for people who are much older than me (and those crazy skirts--! )

Surrep, do you go frequently to dances, or clubs? I'll bet you have no trouble finding partners to dance with.

Wow, Shera, that sounds so neat. Irish dancing looks so disciplined. Nobody breaks a sweat though, right? (Nobobdy ever looks tired!)

Special K, I'm so envious of you. I remember learning a few of these steps while in high school: 10th grade, everyone nervous (boys especially). The football coach teaching us. I'll never forget him demonstrating the cha-cha... He looked like a defensive lineman daintily tiptoeing around...

If only my husband loved to dance, he'd be a perfect 10... (Well, if he would also put his clothes away instead of dropping them on the floor, then he'd really be a perfect 10!)

When I was in my early twenties (a century ago), I took dance lessons. I wanted to learn the current Travolta dances that were popular... only they taught me Tango, Waltz, Fox Trot, Rhumba, Cha Cha, etc. Ballroom dance.

I did very well, too. They had a contest north of here one Sunday in Austin (I had to skip going to a meeting to make the contest), and I did an exhibition Cha Cha with my dance partnet/instructor. I took First Place. *rolls eyes*

Anyway - flash forward to about 2000 and 2001 - my daughter, shows an interest in the latest dance craze... Swing Dance. Boy was _I_ shocked. I even got to go to a JW gathering or two where she and her JW friends had dance there. Swing Dance. I never knew it would be popular like that.

She was good at it, too.

    Regards,

    Jim TX
