Married! Wow! I am so envious. I love zydeco music too, but I've never seen zydeco dance steps.

Jim, Travolta, eh? Reminds me of when I took guitar lessons while I lived in Japan, hoping I could learn to play Simon and Garfunkle stuff. I ended up learning classical instead (I was not very good at speaking Japanese at that point, obviously!). Later, I also learned how to play flamenco. Never got around to learning the popular guitar stuff.

morton, I've never line danced... it sure is popular in a lot of places, though!

shamus, I think that stuff's called marshmallow creme here. To me, that jar looks funny! ...Is that cat related to Brummie?

It's good to see you bringing your son up right...lol...he'll be very popular with the girls if he keeps up the dancing...nothing better than a man who knows how to dance.

I used to swing dance when I was 15. My friend Adam did it all the time, and he taught me how to do some stuff...he's the only one I have danced with...just wouldn't be the same without him I feel...sadly I haven't danced much since and figure I have probably forgotten it all by now...

There is a place in St. Paul...it's a park, actually back in some caves (they used to use them to make booze during prohibition...anyway they have swing nights with a big band every thursday and friday--I have never been, always wanted to--but I don't have anyone to go with and wouldn't remember how to do it either.

Joanna, this is true!! What's funny is when I mentioned that being a good dancer would make him popular with the girls, his eyes took on this devious look and he literally began to rub his hands together. He said, "I'm going to have a whole line up of girls waiting for a dance, while my older brother is going to be surrounded by tumbleweeds!" (You know, entirely desolate.)

I laughed a long time after hearing him say that--he's not even 10 yet. He would only want to have girls around him if it would make his brother jealous.

Estee, you are really, really fortunate to have a great dance partner! I remember reading how excited you were about this recently, having found a special someone to spend time with doing what you both enjoy so much--dancing!!. I'm really happy for you!!!!!!!

I am not familiar with many of the dance styles you listed, though I've heard of all of them. (Maybe when my kids get older, I'll take some lessons with them... )

What a wonderful hobby dancing is, there's always something new to learn and enjoy, and people with whom to enjoy it.

    --But I'm serious!!

    Hi Bebu

you are not alone with the swing music. The real New York City nite clubs ( rainbow room, club el morrocco) play all the swing music from the 1930s and 40s. They also have mariachi bands to play old "Xavier Cugat " cuban swing when the band is on a break. It has been all the rage here in NY since the late 80s early 90s. It is referred to as "Society music".

    I enjoy dancing to it.

I think you can find ANY music style in NYC! What a great place to live for music and dancing (love mariachi!!)

You know... What's really ironic is that my dad is a jazz musician; the band he's in now plays big band/swing for the most part (but also Dixieland)!! I heard A LOT of jazz (improv, usually) EVERY DAY growing up, but I didn't really learn very much about dancing. I think I need to go back and live this story right.

After I learn how to get proficient with swing dancing, I'm going to look into these other steps that people have listed.
