When did the Society begin putting the magazines on audiocassette? Did any of you ever go for these things? Do your Watchtower Study while driving to work? LOL!

    ...and here's the final question....

What the hell do you do with bulky Watchtower cassettes once the magazine is old light? Record Kingdom Melody compilations onto them?

My parents had them, my dad had a long drive to work in the mornings and my mom like to listen to them while cleaning house.

Personally after they became "old light," I would stick rolled up pieces of paper in to the groves on the top of the tape and use them to tape the Guns and Roses videos off the t.v. since I couldnt buy the albums.

I used to listen to the study articles when I was the assigned reader so that I would pronounce all the words exactly the way the tape dictated it.

Only once I was able to sell the new world translation on audio to a muslim,I'm sorry did I say sell,I mean I was able to get a $30.00 contribution for the world wide work from him.

The readers were, one from England he read the Hebrew part and one from the USA.he read the christian part.I don't remember their names, but they had distinctive voices.

Actually I heard starting with the 1/1/04 and 1/08/04 magazines, they will be on MP3. What does that mean?

MP3 is a compressed format of a .wav file. People convert their music to .mp3 format to share with others over the internet. How is the Society distributing these? Will they be downloadable from their website? If so, Apostates will be able to get the latest articles!

If they are on the compressed digital MP3 format, how will they be delivered - what method will they use to get them to the people who want them?

Edited to say - Nosferatu - LOL - great minds think alike!!!

They would be on MP3-CDs ordered through the congregation. What would you play them on, a CD player? Then it is just a higher tech replacement of the audiocassettes.

Can you download from them onto a computer?

Most modern DVD players can play MP3 CDs, as can a lot of newer CD players. Regular CD's can only fit around 80 minutes of sound on one CD. The compressed format of MP3 allows hours and hours of sound on one CD. It depends on the bit rate of course - space verses quality - a spoken word CD wouldn't require a high rate so they could probably fit both the Watchtower and Awake on one CD with ease.

This is interesting, since prerecorded cassettes normally didn't go over the 90min length.

With MP3s at 224kbps in stereo, I can fit a little over 7 hours of music on one 80 minute disc. If I went mono, and reduced the bitrate, I could fit a whole lot more. The Society could put a year's worth of Watchtower & Awake readings on one disc. Although, I highly doubt they'd do that.
