My Name is of No Consequence

I was at Cleveland, and I didn't see as many beards as I thought I would, 6 or 7 maybe.

Being from Pittsburgh originally, our conventions were in Cleveland at the Convocation Center. That was 20 years ago. Is the same place used or is there another venue now? We used to stay at a motel in Westlake.

Still same place now called the wolstein center. They get it dirt cheap the venue loses money So they are thrilled to rent it put the jw's

Yes. The Convocation Center has been renamed the Wolstein Center. I am from the Pittsburgh area originally too.

It really is not used much. There was talk about even tearing it down or repurposing it somehow. It still is in very good shape although it was built in 1991.

We cannot talk of the percentage baptized in terms of growth or decline - because we'd have to compare it with previous baptismal numbers and peak attendances in that region.

Not so sure there should be any correlation between attendance and baptisms. Attendance this year should be compared with the previous year, and baptisms should also be compared with previous years.

So for example, if somehow 500 people in that region became apostates, and left, well then this year's attendance should have some reflection on this, but not baptisms. Those folks decided to get baptized unrelated to the folks that left or any attendance for that matter.

I needed to be clearer in my earlier response because, unless you are grappling with numbers, statisitcal terms can be confusing and differences between them difficult to differentiate.

Here's my attempt to explain:

While a percentage is a ratio expressed out of 100, a ratio is not always expressed out of 100. As a rule, you do not speak about a percentage value and a ratio value by using exactly the same number.

Definition of ratio: Result of one number or quantity divided by another. Ratios are the simplest mathematical (statistical) tools that reveal significant relationships. A ratio does not need to be out of 100.

Definition of percentage: A percentage is a number or ratio expressed as a fraction of 100. A percentage is a dimensionless number (pure number). A percentage needs to be out of 100 or a multiple thereof (1,000).

Soooo, if your percentage is (for example) 0.005% you would call it a percentage - and leave it at that, rather than calling it a percentage ratio (1.5% ratio of baptisms...) as was done in an earlier post.

That aside, my main point in that earlier comment was you do not 'work out' cumulative percentages by multiplying each percentage - when it is more correct to obtain an average of the percentages.

In relation to beards, it just shows how Watchtowers most recent study article on dress and grooming is having an impact. It's just so borderline. Yes it's fine to have a beard etc....BUT...

Now brothers worldwide are pushing the boundaries as to what is and what is not acceptable in JW land and has everyone talking about.....like yeah...what the hell was all the fuss about!!! Welcome to reality Watchtower.

@ UnshackleTheChains. And, this whole time I was told by many brothers that it's allowable for brothers in Europe to grow beards bc it's their "custom" (unlike in the US). I'm quickly figuring out that their reasoning is a copout. It just seems brothers everywhere are realizing that there is nothing wrong with it! In our congregation, all but a few were completely fine with my growing a beard. They simply didn't see what the big deal was.
