The main driver behind the 2013 revision, as others have mentioned, was to produce an English text that was easier to translate into dozens of new languages. This seems to be borne out by statements from the GB themselves, the subsequent increase in new translations, and the dumbed down phraseology of the 2013 revision.

Mind you Psalm 94:19 now reads as "When anxieties overwhelmed me, you comforted and soothed me."
Now that definitely reads better than the previous intimate description of "you fondled my soul."
Perhaps the word FONDLE had too many negative connotations for the WTS?
