ballistic --- I'm not talking about just one bomb here . They have enough of that stuff to destroy the planet several times over . They are aware of it and have publically said so . I'm not just making stuff up here . It all sounds critical to me .

Good Thread!-----I feel the same way towards Mt. 28: 19, 20, "Go therefore and preach.....'' Who was Jesus talking to? Everyone over the next 2000 years or to his disciples at THAT time? When Peter and Paul talked about the "last days", were they referring to THEIR time or ours?....Truly, it is a Watchtower con game.

MET,
One important point to remember in this...Paul called HIS TIME the Last Days...so "last days" is a very relative thing....all time after the resurrection is called the last days.

Rev. 11:18, "...God will bring to ruin those ruining the earth..." I could understand this scripture to mean the earth being ruined on a 'global' scale, not a regional area. How is mother earth being treated today on an international scale?

got my forty homey?
The Earth has an amazing ability to rejuvinate itself after disasters, man made or natural. Look at Mount St Helens after the volcano's in the 1980's. In several years everything was growing back and normal. Or look at rivers in Big cities which in the 1960's were polluted to the point where they were catching on fire! Today many of these rivers are full of life and fish and are clean because of enviromental laws created in the 1970's.
I always wondered about the earthquake portion of these prophecies. Have earthquakes increased in the last thousand years, are there any records?

got my forty, etc. question, so mother earth can swallow radioactive waste and testing, yet not be endangered? What has oil spills done to earth's creatures? Why are sea creatures being beached? I'm talking about conditions on a global scale with a global population at the same time! I'm not talking about sporadic earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, nature takes care of its own. What man takes from the earth he gives back scrap that cannot be recycled. Look at the used tires and scrap cars. Where are all the scrap airplanes parked? Recycled, yes to make other man-made products, but for mother earth, is it natural and useful?
We have a local proprietor who has allowed chemical dumping on his property. Why, for E.T. it would be home for him, he would be in a constant glow! We have another property owner that every once in awhile a fire is suddenly ignited.
You wouldn't need environmental laws if man respected mother earth. Have you read about the deformed frogs in the mid-west? Sure the earth can take care of itself just like your body, the question is how long must man continue ruining the earth? Keep feeding your body junk and see what happens to it. Sure the earth is amazing, does this mean that we should keep feeding it junk and it will take care of itself? Oh, the enviromental laws will correct the situation, yeah right, just like more laws would make man moral!

You need to read COJ's SIGNS OF THE LAST DAYS -- WHEN? because he totally debunks the whole WTS's case on earthquakes.

On the subject of whether earthquakes have increased or not, check out the United States Geological Survey : National Earthquake Information Center's website, which answers this very question:
http://wwwneic.cr.usgs.gov/neis/general/handouts/increase_in_earthquakes.html
Then check out this recent quote from the WBTS:
Awake! March 22nd 2002 Issue: Earthquakes, Bible Prophecy, And You BEFORE his death, Jesus foretold events and situations that would give evidence that this world had entered 'the conclusion of the System or things.' That period, he said, would be marked by such things as' pestilences, food shortages, and large-scale warfare. He also mentioned 'great earthquakes' that would occur 'in one place after another.' (Matthew 24:3,7; Luke 21:10, 11) Was Jesus referring to our day? Many say no. They assert that the number of earthquakes has not substantially increased in recent decades. In fact, the U.S. National Earthquake Information Center reports that earthquakes of 7.0 magnitude' and greater remained 'fairly constant' throughout the 20th century.' Note, though, that the fulfilment of Jesus' prophecy does not require an increase in the number or power of earthquakes. All Jesus said was that there would be great earthquakes in 'one place after another.' Furthermore, he stated that these events would mark the 'beginning of pangs of distress.' (Matthew 24:8) Distress is measured; not by the number of earthquakes or how they rate on' the Richter scale, but by the effect that they have upon people. Some say that any reports of an increase in the number of earthquakes are simply due to advances in technology, which enable more seismic events to be detected.
So, even the Society now accept that the numbers of earthquakes is no longer an issue. But only because they can't carry on such a bold-faced lie now the information age is here!
On the whole I agree with Metatron - sure, like others say, there are still huge problems to overcome, but the point is most humans today live lives they couldn't have dreamt of in previous centuries. Yes, there are still many millions living in absolute squalor, but this has always been the case, it's nothing new. At least now the wealthier countries are making efforts to appease the situation. Also, I believe that the environmental problems we are facing will also be addressed eventually.
Wars? Was the 'first world war' (an arbitrary title) really unprecedented? Check out the Taiping rebellion in China (1850) which is often described as 'one of the most violent events in human history' - 20 million people killed (twice the casualty figures of WW1). But of course they were mainly Chinese, so these lives don't count do they?
Personally, I am optimistic about the future. When I have this conversation with JWs I always ask them what century previous to the 20th would they like to have been born in? Then I reel off al the problems associated with that century which makes ours look rosy by comparison.
