Yes, I think the Epic of Gligamesh is sumarian and that pre-dates the bible by a thousand years or so. It has a slightly different flood story which ends with the sea god hanging his bow in the sky as a sign... hmmn, plagurism ?

Dont forget before Noah the earth was cursed. After the flood, Jah lifted that curse, and what is one of the vital ingredients to grow crops?
RAIN.
I think the rain was more of a good thing, showing Noah he had fulfilled the above promise by setting a balance so crops could grow.
patio34,
I agree. If you want to get into some really cool fanciful tales about stories borrowed by the Hebrews, read some of Z. Sitchin's books(Earth Chronicles, Genesis Revisited)

Simon,
So every time I look up at a rainbow, I'll know I'll be in good company when God slaughters us all.

I have often wondered about the "two of" thing - if a species gets down to very low numbers it becomes threatened; not enough genetic diversity.
Noah only sacrificed male dinosaurs!

I figure Noah was good and sick and tired of all those animals by the time the sun came out, he was probably glad to get rid of a few of them.
I also am interested in the Sumerian info. Please let us know Patio!!
Somebody,
Have you ever seen a double rainbow? I have seen several. I still get as excited as a little kid when I see rainbows. I just think they are so cool. (nothing to do with the Bible account)

Did the Sumerians pre-date Noah?
Whatever. My sweeping saga, soon to be made into a full-length motion picture, starring Donald Sutherland as Noah and Mimi Rogers as Mrs. Noah, will clear up these minor details.
And, as someone noted, the Hebrews prolly borrowed this story in what was the first case of copyright infringement, and attributed the entire magilla to Noah. Oy Vey!
If it's a Hollywood production then it won't matter that it is historically inacurate as they always are (pearl harbour, braveheart, saving private ryan...) oh, and of course Noah will be an American and they always win
ROTFL....at Simon,
You have reminded me of a book written by the author Ian Plimmer about Noah's ark and the believability of the entire story.
He claimed that if that many animals were in an ark the size of which the bible refers to, the whole thing would have blown up from the Methane Gas given off by the animals defecating.
I couldn't help tell that bit of a funny,
